ALBUM OF THE MONTH Various Artists - Biggest Ragga Dancehall Anthems 2011 05/09/2011 (Greensleeves)
Smooth grooves abound on reggae-meets-dancehall compilation
Gappy Ranks is a natural, homegrown talent from Harlesden and with great influences such as Gregory Isaacs, he too aspires to be a musical icon in the reggae industry. Ranks videotaped his song ‘Long Time’ in his hometown, which tells the story of him growing up in the borough. The mostly black and white music video shows the community in its raw state. Having worked with the likes
of American rapper Twista, UK MC Lethal B, Kray Twinz and even the dancehall collective Suncycle, the road for Gappy can only be leading to big things.
The new album Thanks & Praise, issued under his own Hot Coffee music imprint, is predominantly made up of reggae songs; ‘Sweet Love’ and ‘One Day At A Time,’
amongst others, create a mellow and relaxing ambiance. It also includes a few upbeat dancehall songs to get you enthused about that upcoming night out... The heartfelt, personal and thought-provoking tracks, from the man who never, ever writes his lyrics down, have an overwhelmingly predominant vibe: live life to the max. Find out more at

BERES HAMMOND @ O2 ARENA
One of the most under-appreciated reggae artists of his time is back in London for a one-off date
Beres Hammond is coming to South- East London to perform at the O2 Arena on the 5th October. Known for his educated lyrics and 30 years of experience in the music business, this show is sure to live up to big expectations.
Beres has established a massive legacy of soulful reggae music that mums will love and the younger generation may take something from; ‘Rockaway’ is just one standout tune from his many hits harkening back to reggae days gone by. If his music over the years has taught us anything it’s that he is one passionate guy and will certainly be worth watching. For more information check out myspace. com/bereshammond

This vibrant album consists of all the popular tracks running the streets this summer. The compilation of artists alone should have you sprinting to your nearest HMV store to add this to your collection. ‘Don’t Wanna Be A Memory’ by Mavado gets the ball roll- ing, and the positive lyrics in conjunction with the harmoni- ous back-up vocals are simply uplifting.
The optimism continues with Chan Dizzy’s ‘Hello Badmind,’ which rides on more of a rap beat but is definitely worth listening to. The album picks up the pace with Vybz Kar- tel’s ‘Real Badman’ as a major highlight along with Mavado’s ‘Star Bwoy’ and ‘Bounce A Gal’ by Di Genious, which are also hard-hitters with the smooth-sounding riddim and vocals. The album is available digitally and in stores on 5th September 2011.
