DJ Hannah Wild sits down with us to talk about her first experiences with music, her link with make-up company Bourjois and who she would invite to her desert island
Can you tell us how you first became interested in music? I’ve been into music longer than I can remember. I grew up on Michael Jackson and loved the big synth sounds in his music. Those sounds stuck and by the time I was about 12 I was listening to early rave stuff and thoroughly annoying the ol’ neighbours. I got a tiny two-octave keyboard when I was really young and taught myself to play and read basic script music. I begged my family to send me for piano lessons, which I rode my bike to in the freezing depths of winter. I don’t know how you can play keys with frozen fingers, but I did; I must have really loved it!
You are on the dance label ‘Hardasfunk! Recordings’ which is supported by artists such as Carl Cox, Dave Clarke, Marco V and Paul Van Dyk. This must be a great achievement... Yeah, Hardasfunk! is one of those few remaining labels that has kept its quality control; they don’t churn out releases just for the sake of it, so I know that they actually value my work. It’s really great to be involved with a forward-thinking label that’s not scared to try something a bit new.
What are your favourite artists at the moment? Difficult one! I really like what Dubfire does, big into his sound. Fergie is one of the few that I still try and make the effort to see, always great to see him smashing it. Liking Burnski for earlier set stuff, he makes some really interesting beats. And Arjun Vagale is notably making a regular appearance in my CD wallet; he looks to be doing really well right now.
Tell us about your link with Bourjois make-up company, how did this come about? I’ve always had a flare for make- up. To me it’s just another form of artistry and being creative; much in the same way as music, it always has to flow. I’ve been to beauty school too, so incorporating it into my music has always been the idea. But it was actually Bourjois who came to me after stumbling upon my music, which they wanted to use for some videos they’ve done with Grazia Magazine (these can be found on Youtube). It was a very quick progression to endorsing me as an artist and asking me to front their Volume Clubbing range of products. I tell no lie when I say I have genuinely
used their Volume Clubbing mascara religiously for years as it really does stand the test of a hot DJ booth. I think we’ve got a really good opportunity to do something a bit different here and it seems a very natural step to tie in their Clubbing products with someone in the industry. And I have to thank Pioneer for supplying me with their new HDJ-500t headphones for the Bourjois image; they look really cool.
Do you think that the dance music scene is saturated with men? The music industry is very much a boys’ club. Promoters, producers, DJs and club owners are usually all men. In such a male-dominated world it can be hard work to be taken seriously. It doesn’t help that there are girls and ‘celebrities’ posing as DJs who are getting gigs when they have absolutely no musical talent. It makes things hard for those of us who are serious about it. There are more talented girls than ever coming through, or at least trying to cut through all the crap. Personally I’d really like to see more female promoters at the top of the game as that would probably help even things out a little bit.
Do you have an album coming out? I’m currently working on an album for 2012. You’ll have to stay tuned for more news on that...
So here’s a scenario: you are exiled from your home and thrown onto a desert island. What three people (dead or alive) would you bring? Jim Morrison (the voice), Michael Jackson (the moves), and Lee Evans (the laughs).
If you were invisible for a day, what would you get up to? Where do I start? Would be a very busy day of causing a lot of trouble!
Can you give us an exclusive? Well, you’ve got one already on my partnership with Bourjois! But alright, here’s a fresh piece of news. I have just signed with dynamic, worldwide DJ agency, Nu-Tech Artists. I’m excited to be working with such a forward- thinking agency, which is the brainchild of another great female cutting her mark on the industry. Maybe it’s not such a boys’ club after all?
exCluSIVe PaRTY Come and join the exclusive party on Friday 9th September from 10pm to meet and watch Hannah perform live while getting free makeovers and manicures. (Professional make-up artists will be at the club until midnight).
