WHAT IS MOOMBAHTON? The next big electronic music genre could be around the corner...
Over the summer, a new electron- ic music genre has been emerg- ing. Some love it, some despise it, and most haven’t heard of it. The question is: what is Moombahton?
Back in 2009, David Nada turned up to his cousin’s house party with his usual array of house and techno tunes, but there was a problem: it was a reggaeton vibe. When his turn to mix was up, he decided that rather than kill the atmosphere he would try to slow Dutch house down to 108 bpm. He choose the Afrojack ‘Moom- bah’ remix, and it had the crowd going crazy. Nada realised he needed to take this sound to the studio, and thus, Moombahton was born.
Moombahton sounds like the love child of Dutch house and reg- gaeton. It features five classic
elements: chopped vocals, lay- ered acapellas, extended and en- hanced build-ups, new drums and percussion elements, and the vital 108 bpm speed. It is bouncy, en- ergetic and, quite honestly, sexy.
Top Moombahton artists include Munchi and Dillon Francis. It has been embraced by the likes of Toddla T, and Skrillex has been known to drop some in his set. It’s kicking off in Washington DC and LA is ever warming to it. Closer to home, Notting Hill Carnival saw a massive set from Dillon Francis b2b Brodinski, one of the first in the capital.
The UK has so far been divided in its opinion. Some think it’s re- hashed, and others think it’s go- ing to be the next big thing. Which will it be? We will just have to wait and see...

Devoted house DJ and pro- ducer Will Sumsuch is known for his releases on the Urban Torque label as well as remixes released with Hed Kandi and Time, amongst many others. These days, Sumsuch is work- ing on a brand new EP: “It’s not a concept record, but there’s definitely a theme running through it”, he tells us. “[The record] is basically comparing a love affair to a storm. The thrill, energy and power you feel when you’re standing next to it, the turbulence inside and the relief you feel when it passes.”
The Brighton-based deep house veteran has been gaining respect on the scene for over twelve years
“The title of the LP is Close To The Storm,” Will explains, “which is an exclusive for The Guestlist Network! Even my la- bel doesn’t know that!” With his recently released LP Miakoda receiving love from deep house big dogs across the spectrum, we are especially excited to re- ceive his upcoming long player, which is to be released in the near future. Exciting stuff!
