The Alabama folk duo prepares for their trip around the UK

You could say that an album peaking at number four on the UK album chart and a month- long tour is the well deserved culmination of ten years of hard graft. Sisters Catherine and Alli- son were ready to abandon The Pierces in favour of solo projects until their friend Guy Berryman (Coldplay’s bass player) offered to help produce their album.

After their Glastonbury recent festival,

success at the

to sis-

ters are planning to crop up in Glasgow, Manchester, Birming- ham, Cambridge, Norwich, Brigh- ton and of course London,

name a few. Tickets are £13.50 and the tour is running from 7th - 21st October.

PULP @ O2 Academy Brixton - 31st August

10 YEARS AGO THIS MONTH...

What were the most important events in indie 10 years ago?

THE SPICE OF LIFE

(drums) and Dorian Wolf (bass). Their band name was taken from Katie’s middle name, which also happens to be the goddess of light in Latvian mythology, and their sound would

certainly suggest

a fittingly mythical and ethereal quality to it. First single ‘Beat and Pulse’ provides a window into a dark world of pulsating synths and infectious drum lines, giving the de- fined musical background for Ka- tie’s enticing operatic vocals. Their most recent offering of ‘Lose It’ is sure have you hooked instantly on

the unforgettable vocal lines and transcending musical background.

Having signed with Domino re- cords the band have released their debut album Feel It Break in May and have been touring around America and Europe playing shows like Southwest Music Conference

and Festival (SXSW) 2011, but what you really need to know is that they will be headlining Scala in London on the 6th September. This band is one you want to watch live and should not be missed; get your tickets from

Pulp return to Brixton Academy for their most intimate set since the reunion at Wireless

After a nine-year hiatus, a huge reunion show in Hyde Park and a secret set that closed The Park at Glastonbury, Pulp finally returned to the intimate indoor surround- ings of the Brixton Academy for a

career-spanning set. Jarvis

Cocker was as good as ever, prancing and dancing around the stage like a man half his age. He commanded the audience with

his presence and delivered his usual cheesy banter between songs.

‘Common People’ got

the biggest reaction of the night as the thunderous sing-a-long almost brought Brixton’s roof down. Judging by the perfor- mance, Pulp should keep this reunion going; they sound better than they ever have.

PJ HARVEY In a monumental moment for all female artists, the English singer- songwriter became the first woman ever to win a Mercury prize for her 6th album, Stories from the City.

BOB DYLAN The living legend released his

31st studio album, Love and Theft.

YANN TIERSEN His

soundtrack to the well

known French film Amélie Poulain, was released and went on to win the award for ‘Best Original Soundtrack’ at the World Soundtrack Awards.
