At the beginning of the year, I set up a wellness goal to walk 1,000 miles in 2011. I wanted to create something that would motivate me on a daily basis to get out and walk, and I wanted to do it in a way that would not allow me to drop the goal within several weeks.
The biggest impediment for me achieving my own wellness goals is my ability to come up with 1,001 reasons why I can’t exercise. I needed started to blog about the goal and let everyone around me know about the goal. I started a daily walking log, using project management earned value management measurements of planned completion vs. actual completion to keep me on track and motivated. What I didn’t plan on was ongoing encouragement from our team at Cheetah Learning. People in my life are used to my ambitious goals by now, but this is a result of consistently good project management helping me achieve goals over the years. None of the team told me I “couldn’t do it” or that it was “too far,” perhaps because we Cheetahs have a very subjective view of reality.
In January, the entire company was still doing mile walking goal as an example of a way I I was also posting examples of how I was positive attitude towards taxes. One of the students suggested I combine my two goals and walk to raise money and awareness for fair taxes. Thinking that was just one more way to motivate myself to stick with my goal, I added raising money for the fair tax initiative as another reason. Now when I’m out walking, I also don’t

feel so much a victim of the United States’ increasingly byzantine taxation system and overly aggressive taxation collection practices. The IRS probably doesn’t feel as good about this as I do.
In February, I celebrated the passing of another initiative to make me a framed calendar to track my walking goal. It was an adult’s version of the smiley chart that I used to create for my children to track their goals such as brushing their teeth. It was such a sweet gift. I posted it in a very visible section of my house. Just looking at that on a daily basis reminds me that if my student, and friend Bill could go to all the trouble to create the detailed present for my birthday, I had darn well better stick to my walking goal. Maybe I’ll even start putting stickers on it, because you’re never too old for glitter.
In March, I was on a business trip with several of the Cheetahs to do a conference in Nevada. The weather was cold and windy, which would normally cause us to talk each other out of outdoors activities. With my walking goal being much publicized, anytime I was with another
