Levolux fins on 45
400mm wide, extruded aluminium Aerofoil Fins from Levolux were applied in vertical stacks above windows at London’s 45 Park Lane to reduce the exposure of windows to direct sunlight. By reflecting and absorbing heat, Aerofoil Fins can reduce solar heat gain, virtually eliminating the need for air conditioning, saving energy and reducing CO2 emissions. Levolux installed 763 lengths of Fins, fixed at 30 degrees, the optimum angle for countering the sun’s rays at their peak intensity. Over 20 per cent were curved to a precise radius following the contours of the building for a seamless aesthetic of Fins that wrap around the building.
Enquiry no 201 Ventilation systems
Elta Fans and IMCO have provided ventilation systems for the car parks at Istanbul’s Turk Telekom Arena. A total of 180 fans from Elta - a mix of JetVent centrifugal induction, JetVent Impulse Ventilation and SmokeVent emergency ventilation - were installed to protect the car park, along with electric switch gears, control panels and extract motorised dampers sourced locally by IMCO. A detailed study was conducted focusing on smoke extraction from a long opening to the car park of approximately 100 metres. This ensured the location and orientation of the fans was optimised to counter environmental factors such as wind direction and velocity.

Climate
control Outdated heating and cooling plant at four Hollywood Bowl and AMF Bowling Centres have been replaced with Mitsubishi Heavy Industries’ (MHI) heat pump systems with further sites to follow. The new systems employ MHI’s inverter technology offering variable capacity control for consistent temperatures and energy savings up to 38 per cent. Increasingly expensive to run and to repair, the existing HVAC systems were ready for replacement. The old cooling systems also used ozone- depleting R22 refrigerant, which will be illegal to service in a few years time so it was an ideal opportunity to get ahead of the ban.

Revolver protection
GEZE UK’s three leaf manual TSA 325 revolving door protects priceless displays at No.1 Smithery in the Historic Dockyard Chatham from theft and the elements. As well as enabling safe public access and egress, the TSA 325 maintains the building’s delicate environment by reducing heat loss and gain and eliminates sudden draughts. A UV protective film was installed on the glass surfaces to protect the interior from sunlight. The traditional look of the TSA 325 enhances the historical atmosphere of the museum, and also reduces the speed with which people are able to exit the building, reducing the likelihood of theft.
Enquiry no 204 Solar thermal collectors
A new build sports pavilion in Yarborough, Lincolnshire has installed 90 Kingspan Renewables Thermomax vacuum tube collectors to reduce carbon usage levels, increase efficiency and create an excellent, sustainable facility for local sports teams and students. The HP200 Thermomax vacuum tube collectors provide up to 70 per cent of the pavilion’s annual hot water needs for showers and washbasins. Tailored for Northern European climates, Thermomax vacuum tubes allow energy from the sun to be collected efficiently and effectively. The vacuum inside each tube provides perfect insulation by protecting the system from outside influences, such as cold, wet or windy weather.
