Paddling pool refurb

GUILDFORD LIDO has opened for the summer season with two refurbished paddling pools. Owned by Guildford Borough Council and operated by Spectrum, the facility is set in four and a half acres of landscaped gardens and includes a 50x27m Olympic sized heated swimming pool and two children’s paddling pools, each one 33m long and 3.6m wide. Flexflooring was appointed to improve the aesthetic appeal of the paddling pools area and increase the safety of the pools’ interior and surround. More than 300sq m of Rubbaflex rubber pool surround was installed in a mix of yellow, orange and white to create a contrast to the colours used within the pool. Over 250sq m of Ultratuff was then sprayed onto the paddling pool steps and floors. This stage included the application of a primer and the masking up of edges to ensure a smooth finish is maintained between the two products. Two coats were applied using an airless sprayer leaving a bright surface; Safety Yellow for the step and Waterpark Blue for the pool floors. Simple design work to the pool floors shows a number of sea creatures in contrasting colours including a starfish, shark and stingray.

Connaught goes chlorine free

THE CONNAUGHT Hotel in London, home of the first Aman Spa outside of an Aman resort, has switched from chlorine to the PoolSan chlorine replacement system in its 33ft indoor pool. Since using the chlorine free liquid biocide dosing system, there is no odour around the pool and the site no longer reports damage to the metal fittings that it experienced with chlorine. The PoolSan installation team spent one day installing the dosing system and bringing the maintenance department up to speed with the new controller. The next day was spent making sure the staff was confident with water testing procedures.

Pressure points activate the water showers Splash and play

PROJECT costs of a new splash and play area in Leighton Buzzard have been driven down by positioning the play area on the site of an old paddling pool and making use of the existing infrastructure already in place, such as the tank and pipes. Completed by SSP Water and Play, the

new addition to Parson’s Close Recreation Ground features a range of water showers that are activated standing on pressure points. These include in-ground jets which pop up out of the ground in random sequences, above ground features which spray water and the Water Maypole, which stands at more than 12ft with streams of water which create the patterns of the ribbons on a traditional

may pole when the unit is spun. The facility cost more than £200,000 to build and has been funded by Leighton-Linslade Town Council, which contributed over £100,000, with WREN (Waste Recycling Environmental Limited) granting £50,000 and Central Bedfordshire Council a further £50,000 from funding received from the Department for Education’s Playbuilder Fund. The new feature is aimed at all ages and being on one level will be more accessible than the original paddling pool. The Town Council has also installed new DDA compliant picnic tables and seating as part of general improvements to the facility.
