Solar energy for ‘model’ stadium

A STADIUM in Qatar is being used to demonstrate how sustainable technologies can be used to prevent temperature and humidity reaching extreme levels within a stadium without expending vast amounts of energy cooling outdoor spaces. Designed by Arup Associates, the zero

carbon ‘model stadium’ was a major driver in Qatar’s successful 2022 FIFA World Cup bid and sustainability programme, and will be used as a development platform to refine technologies for application across Qatar. Kier has provided the solar energy

system for the 500-seater stadium. Connected to the structure’s electrical system and national grid, the solar panels located on a sun farm outside the stadium will operate all year round, continuously exporting electrical energy to the national grid. During the World Cup, a higher

The architects describe the Windcatchers as “the modern interpretation of the wind towers”

Natural ventilation at Waterside Theatre

CREATED by theatre architects RHWL, the Waterside Theatre in Aylesbury has been inspired by local features, with the undulating roof reflecting the shape of the neighbouring Chiltern Hills and the use of timber columns reminiscent of surrounding woodland areas. The architects were keen to utilise

natural ventilation, but were reluctant to install opening windows. Having worked in the Middle East where natural ventilation is often provided by wind towers, they looked to the roof for a viable alternative.

Thirteen Windcatcher natural ventilation

systems from Monodraught were installed in the roof serving the main foyer and stairs area, the function suite foyer, the gallery, an administrative office and a meeting room. Controlled by a Monodraught iNVent system covering 10 zones in the theatre, they work well within the design of the building and, both internally and externally, form part of the architecture of the theatre itself.

electrical demand will bring electricity back into the facility from the national grid. The national grid electricity, together with generators using biofuels, will provide robust and reliable power for all matches during the World Cup and after the event. The system uses 512 Mitsubishi 185w

polycrystalline modules and six SMA 1500 TL three phase inverters to convert the energy from the sun into electricity, and produces 94.7kWp. The prototype building was designed in six weeks and built in six months, in time for FIFA delegates to visit the site. The stadium also uses the sun’s heat,

captured by solar thermal collectors, to cool the stadium. This system works by piping hot water from collecting tubes into a storage tank and then to an absorption chiller that charges the ice store to cool the facility. The stadium also features a motorised, rotating lightweight roof, designed to shield the stadium from the sun and offer wind protection during matches.

NATURAL RETREATS offers eco-friendly self catering holiday homes across the UK and Ireland. Winner of the Green Tourism Gold Award for its sustainable credentials and design, all residences use low energy appliances and lighting, energy is bought from 100 per cent renewable sources and the company also employs a wildlife management plan. The company specified paints from Dulux

Trade Ecosure range for the refurbishment of its 20 eco residences in Richmond, North Yorkshire. Dulux Trade Ecosure Matt was specified for all interior walls and ceilings. Developed in conjunction with independent

sustainability experts, Forum for the Future, Ecosure Matt has 35 per cent less embodied carbon than standard Dulux Trade Vinyl Matt products, contains virtually zero VOCs and its packaging comprises at least 25 per cent recycled content. Dulux Trade Ecosure Quick Drying Eggshell was applied to all of the woodwork. Created to provide a tough, durable finish, it offers good opacity and adhesion. In addition, it has 10 per cent less embodied carbon and 20 per cent less VOC content than standard eggshell products.
