Alfresco at The Albert
A POPULAR traditional pub in the Lake District town of Bowness-on-Windermere has invested in a Victorian-themed canopy to provide an outdoor drinking and dining area. Andy Thornton Architectural Metalwork Division was approached with basic proposal drawings and a brief to detail an elaborate traditional design in keeping with the period setting of The Albert pub. The designers at Andy Thornton based their design around their popular Victorian colonnade system which combines columns, frieze panels and spandrels featuring very ornate cast detail. The final design was for a 4sq m
structure attached to the gable end of the pub that fits within the existing slate boundary wall. This comprises decorative structural columns featuring cast aluminium capitals with matching intricate filigree cast panels and brackets all painted a dark green polyester powder coat finish. The pitched roof has been constructed using 6mm thick clear toughened safety glass.

Architects, the first canopy is sited over a side entrance to provide shelter for outdoor sports and a safe gathering and meeting point for pupils and parents. The second canopy, a far more complicated project technically, has been erected between two buildings with an extended
cantilever apron. This provides an attractive, covered courtyard for free flow play for Key Stage 1 children. The supple textile membrane roof
reduces echo resonance and, being translucent, provides a comfortable natural daylight environment and saving electric light usually required for covered areas. The PREO mino columns can be galvanised steel or glulam timber and the membrane roof is treated to resist soiling so that it remains clean through its life span.
