swimming pools & water play
Poolside play
LOW AND HIGH level interactive features combine with bright and vibrant colours in the new inclusive play area at the Concordia Leisure Centre in Cramlington. Designed by Hippo Leisure, the installation
features the Waterball. Positioned on the poolside with more than 45 active water points, the Waterball is linked to a large splash bucket by a 3m span arm housing fish showers, tipping buckets and a resident pelican providing themed water fun. Hand wheels control the direction of the water squirts and create the water supply to polyurethane moulded buckets ready to be hand-tipped and the water released. Elsewhere, an old planter between the
main leisure pool and the children’s pool, has been replaced to create a toddler play area. Interconnecting playful fish squirts with cascading water channels allows the children to twist and turn the paddles to control the water flow from the channels into the pool. A high level water arch provides more action over the pool itself with tipping bucket and water wheel combinations. The surface directly surrounding the play
equipment has been finished with an Aquatrol impregnated safety surface providing a non- slip, impact absorbing surface.

Moveable floor
meets modern needs
STOCKTON Council’s Billingham Forum reopens this month following a £18.5m refurbishment to transform the 1960s centre into a modern leisure and theatre facility. F T Leisure was appointed by the main contractor Morgan Sindall as the swimming pool specialists. Its scope of works included the complete replacement of the water treatment and filtration systems, the installation of a 2m wide static boom and its Aquaterr moveable floor system. The original main pool was 33.3m. The installation of the
static boom created a 25m pool and a separate multi-activity pool, which was equipped with a moveable floor system providing a depth ranging from 0m to 3m. The multi-activity pool can now facilitate mother and toddlers’ classes, aqua- aerobics, children’s lessons, recreational swimming, sub-aqua clubs and more. The pool water distribution systems were also adapted to suit the new geometry of the pools. One of the most challenging aspects of the project was the
installation of a 250Nb moveable floor cable duct, core drilled at 20 degrees from the ground floor plant room to the 3.6m pool base.
The 25m pool is certified to ASA standard and the static boom system has been dressed with all the necessary competition ancillaries including starting blocks, timing equipment and balustrade.
A static boom and moveable floor optimises the functionality of the pool areas 40
