Gym Group seeks sites
THE GYM GROUP is searching for sites throughout the UK in a bid to open 30 new gyms in the next two years. The company, which launched in 2008 in Hounslow, currently operates 16 sites with two more London locations in the pipeline. Backed by Bridge Ventures, a

TURNING a 3,000sq ft office space in central London into a holistic fitness, nutrition and well being facility proved an interesting challenge for CCT Interiors. The brief required the designers to maximise space, light and functionality, without compromising on aesthetics. “Gym environments can be sterile and lack personality and often there is little to tell them apart. The challenge was to imbue the space with the culture and ethos of Lomax Fitness, one with a new approach to the gym experience,” says Colin Owen, head of design at CCT Interiors. Working with Jonathan Lomax, founder and CEO of Lomax Fitness, the design team offset traditional gym equipment with industrial scaffolding to create the concept. Scaffolding was deemed the ideal material for the gym’s ‘podular training’ concept. Waist high scaffolding is used to create various pods in which different exercises are performed. The scaffolding is easily adapted, allowing the gym to be altered as required; pods can be enlarged or dismantled altogether to create a large space and turned back into pods as required. Robust, the scaffolding maintains functionality without affecting light and space.

“It made good sense to use materials
that could be tailored for a variety of activities,” says Owen. “After research and development, we realised that no one piece of gym equipment could offer what Lomax needed. By using building scaffolding and raw materials in a new way, the gym sets itself apart and allowed us to create something that could be tailored for different clients while still upholding the values of the brand.” In addition to the gym, other facilities include a nutrition clinic, treatment rooms and changing rooms.

sustainable growth investor that aims to deliver financial, social and environmental benefits, the budget gym operator is looking for high visibility sites in new locations nationwide, particularly in London and the South East. The clubs average 12 - 20,000sq ft in size and are typically located in densely populated residential developments in city centre, mixed-use, roadside, regeneration or retail park locations. Immediate potential for exterior Gym Group signage is key and sites tend to be over one, two or three floors, sometimes with additional capacity for a mezzanine level. More than 70 per cent of the gym equipment in the clubs are powered by users with only the treadmill machines dependent on electricity. In keeping with the environmental aims of its backers, the Gym Group recycled more than 90 per cent of the 212 tonnes of metal, rubble and plasterboard removed during the recent building of its Kingston site.
