FIVE DIFFERENT products from SureSet’s natural aggregate and marble ranges were used in the refurbishment of a footpath linking a housing estate to local shops and amenities in Southampton. The footpath design, which was created

by project artist Chris Tipping, saw the drab grey paving slabs that originally lined the footpath replaced with a contemporary linear design drawn from the SureSet palette of colours and textures. The simplicity of the design is brought alive by the clever use of contrasting colours. “Although in many ways this was a fairly

typical and straight forward footpath, it presented an opportunity to play with sightlines as well as with repeating elements which could suggest movement and rhythms,” says Tipping. “The smaller areas within the overall design are used to represent meetings along the path between pedestrians coming from either direction”. Chris selected 6mm aggregates in

Frost and Charcoal mixes; the contrast between the colours bringing life to the once plain footpath. The surface was installed to a depth of 16mm as required for an urban pedestrian installation. As well as carrying out the installation of

the footpath, a number of tree pits were also completed using the 10mm SureSet Maple tree pit mix, an open-textured mix that allows water and air to penetrate through to the roots of the tree, while providing a surface that can be easily swept and kept weed and rubbish free. All the aggregates selected for this

project are permeable, allowing water to drain through the surface and so reducing surface water run-off and minimising the potential for standing water to form. With low maintenance requirements and long- life performance, the system is designed to withstand oil and UV damage and remain permanently bound for at least 25 years.
