EDITORIAL Well, that was fun!

I have always enjoyed trade shows and, despite all of the new ways of communicating and networking (many of which I do employ despite my grey beard), I still firmly believe that exhibitions offer a unique opportunity to learn what is going on in the industry and connect with its players. Some shows, it has to be conceded, are harder going than others. Then, every so often one comes along that is simply, well, great fun.

F

astener Fair India - Mumbai was just such. It no doubt helped that it was set in one of the most colourful, vibrant and unquestionably noisy cities in the world, where I defy anyone not to be infected by

the sheer vitality of the place. It also helped that, in a somewhat challenging venue, the organisation of the show was excellent. How everything actually came together for the opening hour continues to remain a mystery to me, but it unquestionably did. There was also a fascinating mix amongst the 90-strong courageous community of exhibitors for this inaugural event. What really made the show for me, though, was the sheer

volume and remarkable quality of the visitors. Volume, perhaps, was not unexpected although it was surprising to see how far many visitors had travelled and I have seldom seen so many people packed in an exhibition hall. The quality, though, was remarkable. My first conversation was with a senior automotive engineer and the day continued in similar vein with very

high quality fastener users from a diverse range of sectors; microelectronics to massive power generation and pretty well everything in between. There were also a lot of Indian fastener producers and some distributors, not convinced to be an early adopter and exhibit first time round but, from conversations I had, very clear about the missed opportunity and keen to know when the next Fastener Fair India - Mumbai would be. You will find the 2013 dates in our report on page 46, which

also highlights one other important facet of this, the first Fastener Fair outside Europe. It was located alongside an excellent second edition of BLECH India - I was staggered by the scale and complexity of technology demonstrated in the hall - which doubled both exhibitors and visitors compared to the first edition in 2009. If that is any kind of indicator of the potential for Fastener Fair India - Mumbai 2013 then all I can say is prepare for a couple of great days.
