Using solar panels to generate electricity is fast becoming a trend among many Israeli businesses with rooftop space to spare.


he solar panels are fastened onto steel frames but these frames are initially fixed onto roof tops of various material types i.e., concrete, tiles or corrugated iron. These different joint types require alternative characteristics from the fasteners, but it is essential that the fasteners


can also resist the damaging wind force at these higher altitudes. Ornit’s solution for the steel frame structures are the high strength,


structural fasteners Stelock, Steelfix, Orlock, Super Orlock, Or-Bolt and Ornilock, which are available in 4.8mm, 6.4mm, 6.5mm and 7.8mm sizes. Ornit explains that these powerful breakstem fasteners are ideal for this


type of application due to their exceptional shear and tensile strengths, which create a vibration resistant joint. The fasteners are also available in a range of corrosive resistant materials including steel, stainless steel and aluminium, so the end user may chose the material most suited to their roof type. One of the predominant features of the blind rivets is that after installation they become tamper-free, making it very difficult, if not impossible, to dismantle them. Ornit Blind Rivets is also currently part of a project involving dairy farms all


over Israel which are switching from traditional power sources to solar power. The corrugated-iron roofed shelters for the cows on the dairy farms provide


a vast area on which the solar panels may be fastened. Ornit’s special peel rivet, the TPR, is designed especially for roof fixtures, it is vibration resistant and has enhanced shear values, which Ornit says makes it the ideal choice for fixing the frames to the corrugated-iron rooftops. “Our extensive product range means that we are able to offer solutions for


many application types and our research and development team is always looking to design and improve products for the end user.”


High-strength frame bonding within seconds


The photovoltaic industry is striving to increase productivity while lowering manufacturing costs. With a new generation of elastic adhesives and sealants based on silane-modified polymers, Henkel says it is now making it possible to attain significantly higher process speeds during automated frame bonding of crystalline solar modules.

enkel explains that unlike conventional adhesive and sealant systems, the new products Terostat MS 500 and Terostat 2K Ultrafast have high initial bond strength and thus substantially reduce the dwell times in the production line. Terostat MS 500 even eliminates the waiting time that is normally required until handling strength is reached. In addition to primerless adhesion to glass, metal and plastics, Henkel points out that the elastic adhesives have


excellent UV, temperature and weathering resistance, and compared to fastening with adhesive tapes offer convincing advantages as they are much easier to handle in the manufacturing process. The elastic adhesives and sealants also offer advantages in terms of design and construction as they are capable of compensating


for tolerances in the laminate or the frame, which reduces the risk of modules becoming detached from frames. Providing high-quality full sealing, they also assure long life of the solar modules. By sealing off all joints and edges, they effectively prevent the penetration of moisture and thus enhance the efficiency of the module during its service life. Henkel’s MS technology contains no solvents,


isocyanates or silicone. The patented Terostat MS 500 is based on silane-modified polymers and exhibits high initial bond strength directly after joining. This sag-resistant one-component adhesive is applied warm and crosslinks by reacting with atmospheric moisture to form an elastic product. By contrast, the two-component product Terostat 2K Ultrafast already cures at room temperature. Crosslinking begins as soon as the two components have been thoroughly mixed, irrespective of moisture levels.
