CONSTRUCTION FIXINGS
JCP celebrates a decade in business
2011 marks the tenth anniversary of construction fixings specialist JCP Construction Products. Here, general manager Nick Beardon gives an insight into how the business has developed over the last decade to become a leading force in the UK fixings market.
the business has strengthened its position as part of Hexstone, the company behind leading fastener and fixings experts including such recognisable names as Owlett-Jaton, Galaxy Fasteners, Stainless Threaded Fasteners and Icon Fasteners. Ten years on, the same core values of customer service
J
and loyalty and a dedication to sourcing and supplying only the highest quality products still drive JCP forward.
In the beginning From its launch in 2001 with Ken Twiby (formerly of Ramset)
at the helm, JCP made an immediate impact on the market. Starting with a blank sheet of paper, Ken created a core product offering that resonated with potential customers – so much so that 70% of our product portfolio in 2011 is unchanged from the very first catalogue. Ken and his sales team of four achieved more than £1 million
in revenue in his first year, growing to £2.7 million after three years. For a start-up company, this was a rapid rise and the industry was starting to take notice. In 2004 I took over from Ken and my aim was simple; maintain
high service levels and support customers with the best products available. A fairly straightforward message but it is one that has seen us through some challenging periods.
The JCP offering Today, as in 2001, JCP offer a comprehensive range of
products to suit a variety of applications. Quality is key and all of our 100+ products come with full technical specification, and in a number of cases European Technical Approvals (ETAs). All products come with a technical data sheet and/or a manual as standard and a full library of product information is stored on our website for constant easy access. Customers can choose to order product from one of our
regional sales offices based throughout the UK. Alternatively, they can access their own account through the trading portal OJ Trade 24/7 to place orders and check stock. Our product guide is available to download from the JCP website, allowing easy access to the range. Our commitment to an extensive stock holding means
product is readily available, competitively priced for next day delivery throughout the U.K. JCP prides itself on being a valued partner within the fixings
industry and as such we represent the UK anchoring industry as part of trade associations like ECAP (European Consortium of Anchors Producers). As you would expect we also closely monitor industry regulations and legislation; most recently regarding CE marking and changes to ETAs. We work closely with governing bodies to ensure we can not only help and advise in such areas but also share knowledge and feedback with our customers directly, so they are advised of any updates.

CP Construction Products was created in 2001 as a specialist supplier of construction fixings to distributors. Since then,
A loyal following JCP is all about offering convenience and choice and this is
something that is recognised and appreciated by our customers. Brand loyalty is important and we feel incredibly appreciative that the majority of our customers have been trading with us since the very beginning. We believe this relationship has been cultivated out of mutual
appreciation. We see JCP not as a quick fix – a trade and then you’re done – but more of a long term support system. Our sales team has 200 years industry experience, covering
the whole of the UK to offer on site product testing and technical advice. We also offer a fully staffed technical hotline to answer any queries or anchor calculations quickly and efficiently. We update our product price list every year – as simple as
that sounds, it is something that is hugely appreciated and it has become something of a product bible for the fixings industry.
A unique anchoring solution As well as our renowned product offering, JCP is well known
within the industry for launching a free software programme – the Anchor Calculation Programme – that is available to download from our website to help builders, architects and specifiers design and select the best anchor for safety critical applications. The programme is popular because it is easy to use with
simple graphics and data input clearly explained to ensure all factors are taken into consideration. A wide choice of anchors can be quickly identified with the option of a number of different configurations, allowing for key parameters such as concrete thickness, anchor spacing, edge distance and loads in all directions to be accommodated for. Anchors can also be filtered out depending upon the material and finish required. A report sheet can be downloaded to ensure all the
calculation results, product identification and installation details can be kept on file.
A forecast for the future Since our inception, on average we have seen a sales increase
of 10% - 15% a year, which is a fantastic achievement and testament to everyone’s dedication and hard work. Even through highly challenging periods, we have been able to maintain a loyal customer base and this is what gives us purpose to continue our journey and look ahead to the next ten years. We are a relatively small team but one with great ambitions.
One of our aims over coming years is to be specified on larger projects consistently. We achieve consistent results and feedback and it would be a major coup for us to be recognised on a larger industry stage. Ultimately though, our aim for 2012 and beyond is what it’s
always been. We will continue on our quest to find new product opportunities and make them accessible to our customers. The relationship with our customers is paramount and as long as they are happy, then we’re happy to serve.
