AUTOMOTIVE

Portugal is the location for a new factory

that will assemble the huge number of batteries needed for

Renault-Nissan’s many EV cars and vans

Te Elektrobay might be now five years old, but until recently, only a small number of EV owners have known anything about how this device and others like it work. Te idea is simple: a socket for the car’s plug is accessed after unlocking a weather-proof door with the swipe of a personalised key fob. As charging starts, the door locks shut, preventing vandalism or accidental unplugging. Elektromotive is also now rolling out rapid chargers, some of which can have an EV back on the road and ready to go in just 20 minutes.

Plug-in posts might be spreading throughout our cities and towns today, but tomorrow should see the arrival of inductive (or wireless) charging, once all safety concerns have been addressed. Unfortunately, the process of installation will mean digging up streets to install induction plates – never a popular activity with road users and pedestrians alike. But with the numbers of EVs, including near-silent buses and delivery lorries with no tailpipe emissions set to grow enormously, any technology that makes the recharging process quicker and easier is sure to be in demand.

Parkhausgebrauch.

KNOW? According to a report by Pike Research the electric car market should rise to $8bn (€5.8bn) by 2015.

Car hire company Avis Europe has ordered 500 Renault EVs (the Fluence and Kangoo Express) for hire in France, Spain, United Kingdom, Germany, Italy, Belgium, and Portugal from the end of 2011.

The impact of EVs on CO2 output varies depending on how the electricity is generated. Cars in countries that generate electricity largely from burning fossil fuels will create more CO2 than in countries where more electricity is generated by wind farms and nuclear energy.
