Lounging in Haneda
JAL opened three new international lounges in October at Haneda on the official opening day of the newest international terminal building, Tokyo International Airport Terminal (TIAT). In addition to its new First, Sakura and arrival lounges, JAL also completed renovating the Diamond Premium and Sakura lounges in the north and south wings of Haneda’s domestic terminal 1. In collaboration with Haneda airport’s popular restaurants such as Kihachi and Akasaka Rikyu, JAL will provide full meals at its departure lounges for passengers departing on late-night flights and who wish to have dinner before boarding. The departure and arrival lounges at Haneda will serve bread from the Maison Kaiser French bakery that has been well-received at the airline’s premium lounges at Narita. The departure lounges will also offer seasonal wines carefully selected by Fumiko Arisaka, one of Japan’s leading and most experienced wine advisors. Wide-ranging amenities available include spacious shower rooms, PC power outlets, free wireless and cable internet connection, special printer services that allow customers to print attached files, and a variety of other business functions. Eligible passengers landing in Japan early in the morning will be able to refresh themselves at JAL’s first- ever international arrival lounge, with six shower suites, semi-private rooms with sofa seats, free internet connection and light snacks.

Extreme catering
Servair and CIS, a leading specialist in the field of catering in extreme conditions, have announced a strategic partnership. The two companies say that the partnership, founded on the complementary nature of their services, will enable them to strengthen their international status in their respective fields. CIS has recently established operations in Burkina Faso, where Servair already operates at Ouagadougou airport, and was able to benefit from Servair’s technical assistance. For Servair, CIS will use its connections in countries where it is already established and where airline catering services are needed. Collaborative projects are already in development, particularly for Gabon and Ghana, new stopovers for Servair, where CIS will give technical assistance as a modular catering system is established. The Lagos stopover may also soon be the recipient of this type of installation.

Kazakhstan gets domestic
Air Astana is launching new domestic routes in Kazakhstan from Almaty, Astana and Aktau to destinations in Russia, Tajikistan, Uzbekistan and Turkey. The new services from Almaty include St Petersburg twice weekly, Dushanbe, capital of Tajikistan (three times weekly) and Tashkent, capital of Uzbekistan (three times weekly). The airline has also launched twice-weekly services from Astana, capital of Kazakhstan, to Yekaterinburg in southern Russia, as well a new once-a-week service from Aktau in western Kazakhstan. Existing regional services already operate from Almaty to Baku, capital of Azerbaijan, Bishkek, capital of Kyrgyzstan, Novosibirsk in southern Russia and Urumqui in western China. A fleet of new-generation Embraer E-190s will operate on Air Astana’s expanding Central Asia network. The airline experienced strong growth during the first half of 2010, with passenger numbers increasing by 14 per cent and revenue jumping 24 per cent to US$245 million compared to the same period in 2009.
