Extra leg room

Lufthansa is installing some 32,000 new seats on more than 180 aircraft in its short and medium-haul fleet giving passengers more than four centimetres extra legroom. As the newly-designed Recaro seats take up

less room than the previous seats, up to two additional rows of seats can be installed on each aircraft enabling Lufthansa to offer about 2,000 additional seats, equivalent to the capacity of twelve Airbus A320s. In order to provide enough cabin stowage

space for all passengers, the backs of the new seats have been designed with a different angle of inclination, so that the permitted cabin luggage trolleys fit under the seat in front. In the case of Lufthansa’s Boeing 737 fleet, the overhead bins have been redesigned and made deeper, so that in future hand luggage can also be stowed sideways to the direction of travel – as has long since been possible on Airbus models. Lufthansa is also making innovations in its inflight service. Economy passengers on domestic routes will be served a snack in addition to beverages and on flights of more than two hours, they will be offered a hot meal. On European routes Lufthansa will work on new menus with renowned chefs commencing with German star- rated Heiko Antoniewicz. In all, Lufthansa is investing about 170 million

euros in its new cabin as part of a comprehensive programme to revamp the airline’s inflight product.

Making an impression Flavours of the Mediterrranean

Gatwick Express, the non-stop rail-air link between central London and Gatwick Airport, has launched a new staff uniform for drivers, conductors, station staff, welcome hosts and onboard catering staff. Designed in the company’s corporate colours

of red alongside charcoal and champagne, the overall effect is a smart, professional and highly visible one. The new uniform includes a red suit jacket, charcoal trousers, a champagne shirt or blouse and a tie or cravat. For colder conditions, staff will be seen wearing black knitwear, a red waterproof coat with a hat, scarf and gloves. Caroline Jarvis, customer service manager for Gatwick Express, said: “It is essential that our staff make a strong visual impression when they are dealing with passengers on and off the train. The new uniform is easily recognisable for our international travellers. Our staff are our ambassadors and it is crucial for them to look their best when they are delivering the world- class customer service we are famous for.” www.gatwickexpress.com
