NOVEMBER, BARCELONA
The Marine Hotel Association (MHA) held its inaugural European Conference and Trade Show in the Hotel Arts, Barcelona in November, under the expert direction of Caroline Pritchard. The Marine Hotel Association celebrated
its 25th year of existence in 2010 and in her introductory speech Caroline emphasised how MHA has succeeded in “putting a face to marine hotel operations and purchasing, which today is recognised as a core element in the complex puzzle of ship management”. It was the first time that OnBoard Hospitality
was invited to attend the event, reflecting the increasingly close integration of suppliers to the cruise and airline industries. There were several familiar names at the show where the emphasis was on the highest quality in wines, foods, tableware and beverages. Supplying a cruise ship when it is in port for just
a matter of hours is a logistical challenge, but one that these specialists seem to take in their stride. However, as ships continue to get larger and larger, travelling further afield, these challenges can only increase still further. OnBoard Hospitality plans to feature more on cruise catering and get a closer understanding of this highly specialist field for

POSie Awards, which is the only award recognising onboard retail innovation. Recognition is given to companies and individuals in the passenger travel industry, and serves as an inspiration for the very best business practices, technology applications, and service introductions in onboard retailing today. Covering four categories, the 2010 POSie award winners were: · Delta Air Lines recognised for Most Innovative Use
of a POS Solution. Delta used POS solution as part of a company-wide imitative to raise donations for The Breast Cancer Research Foundation. Through the sale of pink lemonade and open donations, the onboard programme added to $1 million in contributions. · Alaska Airlines and Horizon Air recognised for the Best Implementation Across Entire Brand Network · American Airlines recognised for Best Implementation with OnTouch™ Ground Connections · WestJet recognised for the Highest Revenue per Passenger in a Buy On-Board Programme. The conference also unveiled several firsts, including the industry’s first ruggedised smartphone-like POS device; new POS software designs; a new onboard retailing intelligence dashboard; and the anticipated Onboard Retail Benchmark covering 2009 and 2010 onboard retail sales in North America.

growth in cruise-based over land-based holidays, other areas of steady growth are Asia and Latin America. The Marine Hotel Association’s 26th Conference
and Trade Show will take place at Grande Lakes Resort, Orlando, Florida April 14-16, 2011.
