As the economic crisis eases and revenues begin to rise, flexibility will be the key success factor, says Jörn Niewiadomsky

While the economic crisis may well be over in many parts of the world, bringing rising revenues and relief from cost and price pressures, the change in your company fortunes can also have its risks. Companies must be aware that an increase in business and better revenues can also expose the weaknesses of their organisation. Many companies simply enjoy the financial gain


and prefer to avoid any hassles. However, this is the time when organisations should be making continuous improvements and not the time to reduce management action. Change always means discussion and compromise,


and, logically, more work. Again, this is not the time to relocate staff to work


on customer satisfaction. This is the time to optimise processes in order to avoid any negative results in the future.


Action plan and precautions: - Increasing capacity as fast as possible without any compromise is the motto. However, in 95% of cases a process is established which is not the most efficient for the company - minimising both profit and quality. By just working on demand satisfaction the implementation of the optimal process is mostly neglected. - In the case of a drop in demand organisations should react immediately. Slow reaction will result in


more margin loss than necessary and a hard battle to re-adjust processes.


We can see a clear difference between forward- driven innovative companies and those who are not. Whereas some companies have slowed down their improvement initiatives, the innovators are already working on the future. They re-invest the profits into a cultural change of the company, preparing the workforce for the ever-changing demand of the market and therefore processes. Besides applying Lean tools and creating a Lean culture they are on

the journey to a Leaner level. Lean administration and Lean and Green are the components that will give them the competitive edge with better quality, flexibility, profit and environmental responsibility. Flexibility is the name of the game.

Jörn studied Hotel Administration at the International Management School in The Hague, Holland and subsequently Lean Manufacturing and Process Optimization at the renowned MIT Institute, Boston, USA. He has more than 10 years of international experience in airline catering and has spear headed local and global Lean and Restructuring initiatives in several industries. He is currently responsible for Airline Catering and Service Solutions.
