dence interval of 11%–42% increase in starting salary (statistical calculations provided by Dr. Dottie Brown, Univer- sity of Pennsylvania); however, addi- tional research and analysis are needed to understand the implications of this finding fully. Unfortunately, the post-internship


salary boost of 26% does not make up in the short term for the approximately $40,000 in foregone earnings during the internship year. In 2009, the aver- age starting salary of a new graduate in private practice was $65,000 compared with the average salary of those pursu- ing an advanced education of $25,000.1 Combined earnings for the first 2 years would still appear to favor those
