Obama signs small business bill into law
Posted September 27, 2010 President Obama signed his $30 billion small business lending package into law on Friday, Sept. 17, 2010, Reuters reports. The new law paves the way for billions of dollars in small business loans and another $12 billion in tax incentives for small businesses that create jobs or hire more people. The bill, which faced strong opposition from Republicans, passed through the Senate earlier this month. The President hopes that the law will stimulate small business growth and boost the still-suffering economy.

Research on new rabies treatment moves ahead

has produced positive results in the search for a cheap and effective human rabies therapy. Phase 1 of the joint project
between MassBiologics at the University of Massachusetts and the Serum Institute of India was completed recently. According to UMass, the study showed that “a new monoclonal antibody (RAB-1) resulted in protective antibody levels in the serum of treated subjects equal to the current standard of treatment, which is often not avail- able in the areas of the world hit hardest by rabies.”

Vampire bat rabies outbreak in Peru kills 20
Posted September 27, 2010 A rabies outbreak among vampire bats in Peru has killed at least 20 people,
including five children, the BBC reports. The outbreak is in a remote area of the northern Amazon region. It could
result in more deaths, the BBC says, since a reported 3,500 people had been bit- ten, while less than a thousand had been treated for exposure to the disease. The bats feed on the blood of mammals or sometimes birds, usually while the animal — or human — is sleeping.

Veterinary clinics surprised by tax on prescription drugs
Posted September 9, 2010 Veterinary clinics in a city near Denver could face hundreds of thousands of
dollars in overdue taxes, the Denver Post reports. Westminster imposed a sales tax on prescription veterinary drugs in 2007, but
practice owners say they were never told. One practice underwent an audit and found out they owed $100,000 in unpaid taxes to the city, the article says. The five practices in the city could take the city to court, the article says.
