Was it worth it? For the second study, alumni of the
University of Pennsylvania’s School of Veterinary Medicine graduating classes of 1998–2008 were invited to participate in an online survey.

The questions focused on respon- dents’ motivation to participate in an internship, their satisfaction with the internship they completed, their com- pensation during that time and their starting salaries after the internship. Data was collected from graduates who had participated in an internship program and those who had not. There was a 9% response rate, with a total of 102 respondents. Although this
is a relatively small sample size and is limited to graduates of just one veteri- nary college, it offers some interesting insights and serves as a starting point for further studies. Of the 102 respondents, 61% had cho- sen not to do an internship and 39% had chosen to pursue one.
About half (48%) of the graduates
who pursued an internship subsequently entered a residency program. Respondents who had entered and completed internships were asked to identify the factors that motivated them to choose to participate in such a program. The two most commonly cited rea-
sons were to increase the quality of care the respondent would be able to offer future patients (83%) and to pursue a residency in the future (80%). Many of the recent graduates did not feel equipped to begin practicing
