How to Use Social Media on a Limited Budget and Limited Time


You are ready to give social media a try, but how can you do it at a low cost with limited staff time? • Setting up your accounts and profiles will take the longest, so set aside an hour or more to get started. This is the stage at which you decide what vision you have for your social media campaign. Put some thought into this step because it will set the tone for all future interaction.


• Build your website and a robust health library. This can provide material for daily updates and give viewers a reason to visit your website regularly and stay awhile. If you use others’ material, make sure it is information that you trust. Remember,


you are educating pet owners so that they can be valued partners in their pets’ care.


• Decide how much time you would like to devote to social media on a regular basis and who on your team is best suited to it. You must devote some time to it but it does not have to be a full-time job.


• Daily updates on either Facebook or Twitter will not take a lot of time and can be enough to drive traffic to your website. Fifteen to 30 minutes per day can be enough when you are starting. Updates need not be long, but they must be of high quality. Tips on preventive care, short pieces about patient


care, and anything that shows professionalism and caring will work, but, of course, be sure to maintain client confidentiality.


• Link to other sites that provide quality pet health information. Veterinary colleges and industry associations are great resources.


• Be patient. It can take time to build a following, but when you do, it will be worth it.
