Before investing All of that said, there are questions
to ask before upgrading either software or equipment to get an integrated system and diving into investing in a new sys- tem that can talk with other machines. As with many other computer-based
purchases, compatibility can be an issue. “You have to ask questions of all the
vendors to get the best integration,” says Wright. “You have to ask some very spe- cific question about what might get inte- grated and not just accept a ‘yeah, it’s integrated’ answer. “Integration” is a vague term that can
mean different things to different people, and it can play out differently in differ- ent practice settings.
“You want to find out what really will
work with your established workflow,” Wright cautions. Asking about plans for future integra- tion is also key, according to Huhn.

Patterson says those who integrate their diagnostic equipment and services with their software see so many benefits that the investment is worth it immediately. “You take people out of the equa-
tion,” he says. “We need people in all these processes, but we shouldn’t need people to do the manual tasks. We need people for their minds and their interac- tion skills with pet owners and pets, not to take data from a machine and walk somewhere else and rekey it.” n
