green yachts Te Technical Committee of Registro Italiano Navale (RINa) has outlined new additional class notations for environmentally friendly yachts and for commer- cial ships using low-sulphur fuel. Te following additional class notations are; Green
Plus for yachts in both the commercial and leisure sectors that provide eco-friendly design, construction and plant solutions and LSF – for ships with machin- ery using low sulphur-content fuel. In addition, RINa has developed the additional
notation Green Plus at three different levels – Green Plus (Y) if the environmental index is at least 60, Green Plus (Y) (Gold) if the environmental index is at least 80 and Green Plus (Y) (Platinum) if the environmental index is at least 100, to be assigned to yachts which adopt design solutions, onboard systems/plant and operational procedures which contribute to improv- ing environmental performance over and above the minimum limits established by the applicable rules. Te design solutions and onboard systems/plant
can include any technical application able to reduce the risk of pollution, such as a reduction in fuel consumption and air emissions, through the design of innovative engines, the use of alternative fuels and high-technology propulsion systems, optimum hull design or use of biodegradable lubricants. RINa has said that these are not prescriptive rules, but have been designed to help designers, shipown-
