Aa: “T ere is a need for an engineer when passing 1500kW installed [power] eff ect in the boat. If you keep the engine- eff ect below 1500kW (1498kW) you can take that engineer away. By using 2 x 749kW (one engine in each hull) many of our carbon boats are operating around 30kts – and that can be an important moment for pricing a route.”


Systems onboard Valö has been fi tted with a conventional shaſt line propulsion system with controllable-pitch (CP) propellers, this comprises two MAN D2842 LE410 diesel engines, derated to 749kW at 2100rpm. T e engines drive Servogear 9P805 four-bladed 1075mm diameter, CP propellers via Servogear 220H gearboxes. Valö is also fi tted with Servogear 9R030-HV Eff ect rudders and Ecofl ow propeller tunnels. As the waterways in the operating area are quite shallow, propulsion solutions such as waterjets are not suitable as it is a risk that debris will be sucked up in the pumps, therefore damaging the propulsion system and the environment. The high-speed catamaran has been equipped with a


navigation and communications suite that includes an Adveto ECDIS-4000 electronic chart display and information system, and the wheelhouse onboard Valö has been fitted out for two-person operation. A crew day room, galley, offi ce space and toilet have been installed in the area behind the wheelhouse. Valö and Rivo are, like the rest of Styrsöbolaget’s fleet,


confi gured for bow on berthing. T e ferry’s single passenger saloon has a 163-person capacity and is fi tted out with West Mekan WM 1000 seats and is also equipped to accommodate two wheelchairs. A ticket offi ce and wheelchair-accessible toilet are located forward. T e interior has been fi tted with 500m2

vessel type, Valö is also the fi rst outside Norway to be equipped with the Undertun UIAS MES SR 150 marine evacuation system. T e vessels has been fi tted with two evacuation systems positioned port and starboard at the rear of the passenger saloon. UIAS MES SR 150 is suitable for one-person operation, and consists of a sliding watertight door, inclined gangway with automatically deploying sides and an integrated 150-person automatically launching and self-righting Zodiac liferaſt .


Composites production Brødrene Aa has to date built 150 vessels in fi bre-reinforced plastic (FRP) sandwich composites using Diab’s Divinycell cores since 1974, the last 23 of these vessels have been constructed using carbon fi bre-reinforced plastic (CFRP) with Divinycell cores. T e switch from using glass fi bre to using carbon fi bre has resulted in weight savings of 30-40% when compared to ‘ordinary GRP/hand lay-up’, whilst attaining an increase in strength and rigidity.
