First-in-series multirole offshore tug delivered from Cheoy Lee
Hong Kong-based Cheoy Lee Shipyards has handed over the first in a new series of multipurpose offshore commercial craſt designed by Wärtsilä Ship Design Singapore Pte (formerly Conan Wu & Associates) in March 2010. Here we take a look at this interesting design.

The vessel, PB Karepo, is of all steel construction and is capable of carrying out all of these duties. Te vessel is constructed to ABS class, with the notation A1, (E),AMS, Towing Service. Te second delivery has been scheduled for early June, and the remaining two vessels in this construction batch of four are scheduled for handover in late 2010. he operational requirements of the new 50m loa multipurpose vessel will be such duties as anchor
PB Karepo, a 50m multipurpose towing vessel built by Cheoy Lee (Credit: Cheoy Lee Shipyards).
250mm controllable-pitch propellers in nozzles via Reintjes LAF 2346L gearboxes with a 3.5:1 reduction ratio. The vessel’s manoeuverability is enhanced by a 320kW Nakashima TCT-105 electric bow thruster. Three Caterpillar 350kW three phase C18 generators supply all onboard power requirements via Teresaki switch and distribution boards, with an 82kW, air-cooled Caterpillar C4.4 serving pas a stand-by. Tere is a fuel capacity onboard PB Karepo of 500m3 and a 240tonnes capacity for potable water allowing for extended range. Te vessel accommodates a crew of 30 in
six four-man cabins, two two-man cabins and single cabins for the captain and chief engineer on the forecastle deck level. Te layout of the vessel includes an elevated bridge with excellent 360degree visibility,
with both forward and aſt facing control stations, each with a Bostrom helm seat. Te steering is by Jastram Engineering and a full array of navigational equipment onboard is primarily from Furuno. Towing gear is exclusively from Plimsoll
in Singapore, including the anchor handling/ towing winch, anchor windlass/towing winch, two rope storage reels, shark jaw, towing pins, tugger winches and capstans. Te deck crane supplied by Palfinger is fitted for liſting the portside rescue boat among other operations. PB Karepo is fitted out with comprehensive
lifesaving equipment including one rescue boat and one workboat. Te two remaining vessels are expected
to be constructed to the exact same design according to Cheoy Lee Shipyards. SBI
