Caledonian MacBrayne equips fleet with Cosalt lifejackets
UK marine safety specialists Cosalt has secured a major contract with ferry operator Caledonian MacBrayne for the supply of its Premier 2010 lifejacket range to meet Marine Safety Committee (MSC) regulations that will be implemented in July.
T
he contract worth £55,000 (US$78,551) is to supply the lifejackets for the largest ferry
operator on the West Coast of Scotland, Caledonian MacBrayne. The contract anticipates the new
and more stringent safety at sea MSC regulations (MSC20 (80)) which is to be implemented in July 2010. Cosalt Premier 2010 is believed to be the first inherently buoyant lifejacket in the world to be approved to the new standard. Te ferry operator sails to 24 destinations
on the West Coast of Scotland, from Arran in the South to Lewis in the North. In 2009 the company carried over 4.75million passengers. Cosalt will be supplying a total of 2400 Premier 2010 lifejackets, including an infant sized version. Te products will be distributed to 13 of the 30 vessels in Caledonian MacBrayne’s fleet. Te Premier 2010, which was specifically
designed for the cruise and ferry market, was the result of a three-year research and development project that involved more than 1000 hours of in-water testing and detailed discussions with leading cruise and ferry operators. Te product has a patented Neck System that can adjust to the wearer’s neck size so it can be worn by anyone from 43kg to 140kg while still maintaining good face angles and mouth clearance above the water. Te patented Reverse Angle Support holds the head at the optimum position for maximum in-water performance even if the wearer becomes unconscious. Te lifejacket self rights in an average of 1.7 seconds. Te Premier 2010 has been specifically
designed to fit persons weighing up to 140kg and with a chest girth of up to 1750mm, in accordance with Resolution MSC.207 (81) amendments of SOLAS Chapter III, without the need for additional items or extensions.

Te lifejacket is also available in child size – 15kg to 43kg 108N inherent buoyancy – and infant size of up to 15kg 6N inherent buoyancy. Andrew Richards, managing director
of Cosalt’s marine business, said: “Our company has a long association with
Caledonian MacBrayne and we enjoy an excellent working relationship. We supply them with a range of marine safety products, from lifejackets and liferafts to marine evacuation systems (MES), servicing and maintenance contracts. We are delighted that they have chosen the Premier 2010 to satisfy the requirement of the new MSC regulations. Tis product reaches new levels of performance with its exciting and innovative patented design features.” The contract between Cosalt and
