Incat Crowther launches 37m catamaran for Africa

Australian naval architects Incat Crowther have announced the launch of a second 37m catamaran passenger ferry for Coastal Fast Ferries of Tanzania. Tis vessel represents a repeat order from the operator, having accepted the first vessel in July 2009.

T

he vessel, Kilimanjaro II, was built by Richardson Devine Marine in Tasmania, the vessel

is a repeat order from the operator, resulting in validation of both the design and build quality delivered in the sister ship Kilimanjaro. Like its predecessor, Kilimanjaro II has

been specifically designed and engineered for operation in Africa. Te vessel utilises previous design experience in designing vessels for operators in remote areas with limited infrastructure. Te systems and structures have been simplified to create a vessel that is efficient to maintain and operate. Kilimanjaro has already proven this philosophy leads to better reliability and increased profitability for the operator, results that clearly prompted the repeat order. Te high-capacity vessel will typically

carry 400 passengers, and is engineered and certified to carry 500 passengers in peak times. Attention has been paid to the loading and circulation of the large number of passengers. Simple hinged ramps are fitted to the vessel on both sides for passenger loading, whilst another pair of ramps is fitted aſt for luggage loading. Te aſt deck has been arranged with four toilet spaces, including spacious disabled facilities, a luggage room and a staircase. Tere is also a luggage room and the

stairway to the mid deck. With large and abundant tinted windows, the vessel provides panoramic viewing from all seats, allowing passengers to enjoy the scenery. Te main cabin contains seating for

200 passengers with further seating for 128 in the vessel’s mid-deck cabin. In addition, there are exterior seats on the foredeck, aſt mid-deck and upper deck. With the wheelhouse located on

the upper deck, the mid-deck has a full-length first-class cabin, offering 360degs visibility. Passenger comfort is ensured with

a zoned; fully air-conditioned interior, kiosk and leather recliner lounges in an exclusive, forward VIP area. There is extensive use of quality exterior-grade carpet on the outdoor decks, whilst the interior decks are finished in commercial- grade vinyl with a light, wood grain finish. Te wheelhouse and wing stations enjoy thorough visibility making manoeuvring easy, whilst extensive, robust fendering along the vessel sides provide protection in challenging berthing situations. Passengers on the awning-covered, open third deck have an impressive view all round and can observe operations through the aſt wheelhouse windows. Te vessel features durable construction,

including heavy hull plating and heavy-duty fendering. Kilimanjaro II is powered by twin

Cummins KTA38M2’s each producing 1200hp the vessel has a maximum speed of 28kts. Coastal Fast Ferries will operate

Kilimanjaro II alongside its sister ship between Tanzania’s largest city, Dar es Salaam, and Zanzibar. SBI
