Conning display To achieve efficient monitoring of key information, Northern Star is equipped with the K-Bridge conning display. Te screen- based information system takes sensor input data and corresponding orders, collected from individual sensors and instruments, and logically groups and presents them on screen. Te system allows easy viewing from the primary workstations up to a distance of 2m from the screen. Te K-bridge conning display employs


a graphic display technique, placing the data inputs appropriately around and on a symbol illustrating the configuration of the vessel. A bridge and watch alarm system is available as an integrated function of the conning display and there are clear alarm message and display and acknowledgement functions at every conning display.


Design challenges Te systems installed onboard Northern Star had to be custom designed in order to fit the high aesthetic values of a luxury yacht’s interior design. The form factor of the systems was re-designed and novel solutions were needed to make the most of the space available. Roger Trinterud, Sales Manager, Kongsberg Maritime cited aesthetics and the limited space onboard as major challenges to the installation. “We solved this partly by placing electronics in panels above the ceiling, and by redesigning our cabinets just for this installation,” he explained. Northern Star’s owner wanted the wheelhouse to have an industrial


finish, but still in accordance with the expected yacht finish. Kongsberg’s consoles have been modified with all panels machined in 12mm aluminium, to be able to mount every piece of equipment, supplied by Kongsberg Maritime or others, from behind. Tis has resulted in a completely flat/flush finish to the console surface. According to Trinterud, “Another issue


was the bridge manoeuvring stations. Our K-Trust panels are not watertight, and we use a different style, with the simpler levers outside. On the Northern Star there was a requirement to have full functionality also on the outside wing stations, so we had to engineer a weatherproof mounting solution for this. Instead of solving this problem for the Northern Star only, we spent time making a solution that can also be used on other projects.” All of Kongsberg Marine’s systems


fitted onboard Northern Star are also fit for operation of large offshore vessels, which depend on reliable equipment for all conditions and climates. “Tere are not many yachts of this type built every year, but about half of them have Kongsberg Maritime equipment onboard. Te fact that our systems are built for the toughest commercial operation and that we are able to tailor them to the size and aesthetics of luxury vessels is a large factor in our strong performance in this marketplace,” said Trinterud. In similar projects, Kongsberg Maritime


is also supplying integrated vessel control systems to six yacht projects, ranging from 65m to 140m in length for customers in Germany, Italy, Spain and the UK. Further details were not available at the time of going to press. SBI
