Feature 9 | SPAIN UNV delivers tug to Italian owner
Spanish yard Union Naval Valencia, part of the Boluda Group of shipyards, has announced the delivery of a powerful tractor tug to sail under the Italian flag. Te vessel is powered by Voith Schneider propellers and features equipment from Spanish companies.
This powerful vessel was built to the UNV 755VS design for ship handling and escort duties and follows on from several other similar builds completed for parent Boluda Group. Tommaso Onorato is 29.50m loa, with

a moulded beam of 11m, a depth of 4m and a maximum draught of 5.76m. The double chine hull configuration incorporates a pronounced sheer and a long, deep, forecastle intended to give maximum protection when operating at sea. Te Voith propulsion units and skeg are of conventional design and location and the aſter deck and winch were kept as low as possible to enhance stability whilst towing. Te design and construction complies
with the class requirements of ABS with the following notations; ABS A1 (E) Escort vessel/towing, Fire-Fighting class 1, AMS, ABCU. During sea trials Tommaso Onorato
achieved a bollard pull of 54tonnes and a maximum speed of 13kts. No figures for steering or braking forces in the escort mode have been quoted at the time of writing. Two Caterpillar 3516B main engines
provide power for the propulsion system, each delivering 2000kW (C-rating) at 1600rpm, 100% maximum continuous rating (MCR) a total of approximately 5434bhp. Each engine is coupled to a Voith Schneider 28R5/210-2 propulsion unit with a blade circumference of 2.8m. Onboard electrical power is supplied
by two 145kVA Stamford alternators each powered by a Volvo Penta D9 auxiliary diesel. The deck machinery onboard

from Spanish deck equipment specialist Ibercisa. Te towing winch is located aſt and deploys its towline through a robust ‘A’ style towing fairlead (staple) which is carefully positioned above the skeg. Designated Ibercisa MR-H/120/150-80- 1, the hydraulically powered single drum carries up to 150m of 80mm diameter towline. The winch has a maximum brake load of 140tonnes and a maximum line pull (on the first layer) of 54tonnes at 9m/min. A Ferri 1516 TN63 tow hook supplied by Industrias Ferri is fitted for secondary and emergency use. The vessel is well protected by a
fendering system designed to withstand push-pull operations using the stern, in normal tractor fashion. Te forecastle, side and bow are protected by heavy ‘D’ section rubber mouldings. Tommaso Onorato is fitted to Fi-Fi
1 and as such has two Jason Eureka remotely controlled, short barrel, fire-fighting monitors that are located
