This series of six courses is designed for students pursuing careers in Environmental Management. After completing the certificate program a student would be qualified as an Environmental Technician. Three classes are offered this semester and the last three classes of the series will be offered in the summer semester: Hazardous Materials Management, Pollution Prevention, and Safety and Emergency Response.

HAZ MAT I - INTRO. TO ENVIRONMENTAL MANAGEMENT Location: Room MD-222 at Palomar College San Marcos 4 Tuesdays/Thursdays: January 24 – February 16, 5pm – 7pm Instructor: Jim Gohres

This 16-hour introductory course will give you a general overview of the envi- ronmental health and safety management field with emphasis on hazardous materials, hazardous waste management, and their effect on the environ- ment and worker health and safety. Discussion of the history of pollution and workplace hazards leading to current legislation, and current best practices of handling hazardous substances to minimize the harmful impact on society and the environment will be stressed.

BARTENDING THE EASY WAY - PROFESSIONAL ONLINE CLASS Location: online

Quick and easy! This exceptional course will prepare you to work as a bar- tender in all types of establishments, while also teaching you the business side of the beverage industry. Bartending the Easy Way will leave you with a thorough understanding of how the bar business works, the ethics of serving cocktails and a common sense approach to bartending. You will be taught in detail how to practice making cocktails on your own. You don’t need to learn a bunch of recipes that you will never use. Other topics included are glassware, tools, recipes pouring the perfect show using the “tail”, bar terms, wine and champagne service, martinis, high-volume sales techniques, laws, responsible beverage service, job interviews and resumes. Additionally, this course will teach you to start your own bartending service and alterna- tive ways to make money in the beverage industry. Upon completion of the course, you will receive a Professional Certificate for Bartending. This course provides an overview of hazardous waste regulations with emphasis on generator compliance, site investigation and remediation, permitting, enforcement and liability. It explains the hazardous waste regu- latory framework, introduces students to the wide variety and types of envi- ronmental resources available, and develops research skills in the hazardous waste area. Proper methods of preparing a hazardous waste manifest, label- ing of storage containers, sampling and analysis, preparing a Phase I Environ- mental Audit will also be covered.

Make a difference in the life of a child! If you are inter- ested in child advocacy work, consider a career as a professional Child Visitation Monitor. The courts often require scheduled monitored visits between a child and a non-custodial parent. As a Child Visitation Monitor, you will monitor the visit to provide a measure of safety to the child. In this workshop, learn the basic principles and practice of supervised visitations, including: *your defined and neutral role as a monitor; *proper and effective parent intake and preparation of the parent and child for the visit; *focus- ing on the child’s best interest and safety; *how to observe objectively and comprehensively document child and adult contact; *proper intervention to prevent physical and emotional harm; *how to handle separation and ter- mination of the visit. You will also gain a basic understanding of the stages of child development, different forms of violence and abuse, the emotional

3-Hour State Required Seminar. As of January 2009, Renewing Notaries may take a three-hour approved Notary Refresher course. Review all laws and regulations you are required to know to continue working as a Notary. You must take the exam and be fingerprinted again. Cooperative Personnel Service will register you for the exam from 4:15 pm to 4:30pm. The exam will be from 4:30-5:30pm. For the exam you will need the following: A $40 check made payable to “Secretary of State”; proper I.D.-current CA driver’s license with photo or state issued ID card; #2 pencils; 2”x2” passport color photo. Fingerprints are required after you pass the exam. A $30 materials fee will be collected in class.
