Letter from the Editor
Welcome to the first Marketing Age of
2010.
In this issue, we talk to Craig
Newmark, who has built the phenome-
nally successful classified ads site
Craigslist by genuinely putting cus-
tomer service and the needs of the
community at the heart of the business.
John Noonan, meanwhile, explains
some of the reasons behind recent successes at Flahavan’s,
one of Ireland’s oldest brands. Garbhan O’Bric, head of com-
munications at Diageo, stresses the need for marketers to be
20
brave and to embrace change quickly, and Martin Thomas
highlights the urgency of adapting to new market realities.
Elsewhere, the newspaper industry may have had a diffi-
cult year in 2009, but Peter McPartlin finds plenty of signs
for optimism.
And we have compiled a special guide to PR, with an
overview of the sector and listings of just some of the many
players in the Irish market.
Thanks as ever to all the MII members and other experts for
their time, insights and expertise in helping to put this issue
together. And thank you to everyone who sent in suggestions
and feedback – please continue sending both to
MA@businessandleadership.com.
