National Survey
The annual Times Higher Education Student Experience
Good personal
Survey (2009) ranked the University of Chichester as 21st
in the country out of more than 100 institutions. It has

risen 13 places since last year, rating it the top modern
university in this survey.

It was joint 2nd for ‘good personal relationship with
Times Higher Education Student Experience Survey 2009
teaching staff’ alongside the University of Oxford and the
University of Cambridge. It was ranked joint 6th for
‘helpful staff’ and joint 8th for ‘good community
atmosphere’.
The survey shows which universities offer the best all-
round experience for students and takes into
consideration well-structured courses, social life, high
quality facilities and fair workload. It highlights
universities which are promoting a first rate experience,
high quality staff, good extracurricular activities and
student support.
Dr Robin Baker, Vice-Chancellor of the University of
Chichester, said: “We support a sense of community and
I believe that explains our success in the survey. We have
also invested strongly in facilities such as better music
practice rooms. We have completely upgraded our major
lecture theatre and extensively refurbished the student
facilities at our Bognor Regis campus.
“There is a feel-good sense here. The staff feel it and that
gets transmitted to the students – they feel this is a place
that is going forward. We are consistently moving up
other league tables and everything seems to be moving
in the right direction.”
“In the Research Assessment Exercise (RAE) 2008 we
were identified as one of a handful of ‘rising stars’,
moving more than 30 places and we are consistently
ranked as one of the top modern universities in the
country. We were ranked 3rd in the Sunday Times
University Guide (2007) and this rose to 2nd in 2008.”
