But connections out with the region are equally important too. North Ayrshire is ideally situated between two international airports, with access to the busiest passenger ferry port, is home to the deepest water port on the west coast of the UK and has excellent direct rail and road links.

Spotlight on Hunterston Hunterston is one of North Ayrshire’s key strategic development sites and comprises the areas including the nuclear power station, deep water port, National Offshore wind turbine test facility and the Marine Yard.

Hunterston provides a unique combination of energy generation, infrastructure and network accessibility. We recognise the credibility of Hunterston as an energy hub because of the nuclear power plant, the offshore test facility and the £1 billion Western Link project which aims to bring renewable energy from Scotland to homes and businesses in Wales and England.

Hunterston Deep Water Port has the deepest sea entrance on the west coast of the UK. It can accommodate the largest capped sea vessels and handle most types of bulk cargoes including liquid bulks.
