Roots Roundup June 2022

Formed by three of the UK’s bright- est female folk musicians and singers, award-winning vocal trio Lady Mais- ery [pictured] released their first album Weave & Spin in 2011 to critical and popular acclaim. At the time of their formation, the three multi-instrumen- talists were already making a name for themselves in various upcoming bands. Accordionist and clog dancer Hannah James was a member of east Midlands band Kerfuffle, harp and concertina player Hazel Askew and her sister Emily were performing as The Askew Sisters, and fiddle player Rowan Rheingans was a member of Fidola, together with Swedish mando- la player Marit Fält.

That debut album, and their subse- quent releases, featured the band’s innovative approach to the traditional music of the UK and northern Europe, singing songs and ballads either unac- companied or backed by their various instruments. Skilfully blending their multiple talents, Lady Maisery have always found the power and beauty in their chosen material, whether that’s a feminist twist in a traditional ballad or the emotions of an anti-war song – all performed with an almost telepathic musical chemistry, which will be on display when they perform at Cardiff’s St David’s Hall on Tue 7 June.
