Summer sports festivals: Urdd Urban Games…

Urdd Gobaith Cymru, Wales’ largest youth movement, celebrates its centenary year in 2022. Proving that the organisation is still very much down with those it caters for, it’s also putting on a weekender that’ll speak to the Jackass generation: Urdd Urban Games. On the freesporting bill is skateboarding, BMX, 3x3 basketball, scooting, breakin’ and dance in Cardiff Bay’s Oval Basin, on the back of their introduction at the last Olympic Games. Also included and encouraged are wheelchair-accessible versions of the above, popularised by Pembrokeshire’s Women’s WCMX World Champion Lily Rice last year – the first British woman to pull off a backflip (and only the second in the world).

Urdd Urban Games, Cardiff Bay, Sat 18 + Sun 19 June. Info: gemaustryd.urdd.cymru/competitions

… and Love Trails

If you like working up a sweat through more than just muddy moshpits and silent tent discos at a festival, Love Trails, clustered around the Gower Peninsula, is the social event of the season for runners. By day, you can take part in a number of “socially paced” runs that vary in distance across picturesque trails, or other adventurous activities; by night, you can take those sore feet and get them moving again around food stalls and DJ stages. And even if you’ve never so much as looked at a running shoe, first-timers are welcome alongside seasoned pros. You can even bring a dog as a running partner!

Love Trails, Gower Peninsula, Thurs 30 June-Sun 3 July. Tickets: £149-£199; £79 ages 12-17; £49 ages 5-11; FREE under-5s. Info: lovetrailsfestival.co.uk
