3 of the best: PODCASTS

KERMODE & MAYO’S TAKE (Something Else)

40-120 min episodes When it was announced that Mark Ker- mode and Simon Mayo’s radio-turned-pod- cast film review show was to end, ‘witter- tainment’ fans the world over decried the loss. Luckily, this was just the end of the duo’s BBC 5 Live tenure. Now, they’re back in bi-weekly podcast-only form with more Marxist rants, Minions fart guns and wassailing than you could shake a Brech- tian alienation device at. Hello to Jason Isaacs once more!

3 of the best: PLAYLISTS

SEROTONIN (Spotify)

Inclusions from queer hip-hop rapper Cakes Da Killa and West London DJ p-rallel make this playlist one to watch. With muses of joy, love and lust that radiate through the sounds of bass drums and disco aesthetics, this ensemble contains unique and tasteful imprints that will be sure to give you that much-needed serotonin boost.

BATMAN: UNBURIED (Warner Bros./Spotify Studios)

32-40 min episodes

Adapting a visual medium like comics to audio once seemed like a madcap ex- periment. However, following Marvel’s success doing so with Wolverine, DC is throwing its cape in the ring with its most bankable figurehead, and seeing similar results. Unburied’s Bruce Wayne follows his father’s footsteps into a medical career, crossing paths with serial killer The Har- vester and forcing the Bat to take flight – right into your ears.

The Evil unDead of 80s horror games

If you’re not a fan of horror games, then really there’s only one fact you need to know: they’re hard to get right. Of- ten, even a well-intentioned developer will mistake cheap jump-scares and tinny violins for genuine fear, leaving the player mildly startled at a campy, cartoonish mess. Yet, recently, horror games have found that leaning into the camp (Crystal Lake) is exactly the way to go. That’s right, 1980s horror is back and many games are sinking deep into bloodbaths of nostalgia and resurrecting all your fa- vourite monsters.

BETWIXT THE SHEETS (History Hit)

40-60 min episodes

The subtitle for this titillating history pod- cast is The History Of Sex, Scandal & So- ciety, the latest edutainment show to make learning about the past less dry than aging GCSE textbooks. “Why did kings and queens have spectators on their wedding night? Who had the very first boob job? And did our ancestors have their unmen- tionables pierced?” You’ve likely never pondered any of these before, but you are now, right?

Available wherever you listen to podcasts (Batman: Unburied is a Spotify exclu- sive).

The most recent success of this revitalised genre is Evil Dead: The Game which is based on the original 1981 sci- fi horror, directed by Sam Raimi. By bringing back eternal survivor Ash Williams, and the evil Deadites, this game pays homage in all the right ways. The main gameplay is that of an asymmetrical multiplayer, which is where each player will have their own character with its own set of objectives and skills.

The advantage of this is that it keeps the experience fresh and exciting for groups playing together; the disadvantage is that, given this 1980s context, it’s not exactly new. Both Dead By Daylight – which has several different worlds and monsters, including Michael Myers, Leatherface and Freddy Krueger – and Friday The 13th, with the infamous Jason Voorhees present and correct, have this method of gameplay.

The question that arises from this: where can horror games go from here? I don’t believe that turning every 80s flick into a game is the answer, but it’s certainly worked so far. It’s brilliant to see the shock value of flashy jump-scares being replaced with dread and strategy, but to create new waves in this creepy industry some originality is desper- ately needed – and rooting through Wes Craven’s cup- board isn’t the solution. Evil Dead is certainly a great new addition to this genre, but if we start seeing Cujo popping up then that might be a step too far…
