Pomegranate is thought to be one of the healthiest fruits in the world. Andrea Zangara explains its benefits in nutricosmetics and other supplements
Andrea Zangara, Head of Scientific Communication and Medical Affairs, Euromed
Given their numerous beneficial effects, for both physical and mental wellbeing, it is perhaps not surprising that in many cultures around the world, pomegranates are a symbol of health and longevity. As a result, they have a long history of use, not only as a food, but also in traditional medicine – a history that dates back thousands of years. Why? Well, it’s because they contain polyphenols known as punicalagins – one of nature’s most powerful antioxidants and anti-inflammatories – which are metabolised during the digestive process into ellagic acid and urolithins, giving them an impressive ability to help prevent a range of potentially debilitating health conditions and improve wellbeing. That’s why Euromed, a producer of standardised herbal extracts, created Pomanox, a natural pomegranate extract that delivers up to 30% punicalagins. Obtained from a natural fruit extract from carefully-cultivated pomegranates using a patented water-only extraction process, it is perfect for inclusion in functional foods and beverages, dietary supplements and nutricosmetics. Punicalagins naturally stimulate the production of nitric oxide, a vasodilator that helps improve blood circulation. A pre-clinical study with Pomanox by the Catalan Institute of Cardiovascular Sciences (ICCC) demonstrated that pomegranate polyphenol metabolites increase the synthesis of endothelial nitric oxide synthase (eNOs), promoting prevention and reversal of endothelial dysfunction caused by general inflammation and artery hardening. Endothelial dysfunction is greatly under- diagnosed in the general population, but plays a major role in the early stages of poor blood circulation and, in its latter stages, is associated with increased risk of cardiovascular issues. Hypertension is another risk factor for cardiovascular diseases, and its prevalence increases with age. In a clinical, placebo-controlled study, participants given Pomanox for eight weeks had lower blood pressure than the control group,

Pomegranate extract has also earned its place among so-called healthy agers. People aged over 50 are becoming a more significant percentage of the population in almost every country of the world and, according to the World Health Organization, one in six people globally will be 60 or older by 2030. For this target group, maintaining mobility and strength is important not only for quality of life, but also because they often need to work for much longer than previous generations. Here, manufacturers of sports nutrition supplements can address those needs with tailored products that may also compensate for age-related nutrient deficiencies.
As the name suggests, such supplements can also be beneficial for those participating in sport. That’s because the physiological effects of polyphenols have been proven to help improve a range of performance parameters, including increased endurance, distance covered in a pre-selected time period, time to complete a certain distance and maximum power output in both untrained – but particularly trained – male athletes. A randomised, placebo-controlled clinical study demonstrated improvement in peak performance and recovery after an exhausting endurance trial in trained amateur cyclists who had consumed the pomegranate extract. Yet the benefits of powerful pomegranate punicalagins extend beyond the support of physical wellbeing, as further published studies suggest that Pomanox may support mood too and, within just one hour, improve aspects of cognitive performance such as visual memory. Moreover, a recent in vitro trial suggests that the extract could also reduce signs of skin ageing, such as hyperpigmentation, dryness and loss of elasticity and improve eye health. So, when it comes to proven beneficial effects for physical health and mental wellbeing, the power of the pomegranate and its punicalagins can never be under-estimated
