A question of waste
Last month, I was lucky enough to attend the two-day official unveiling of Lush’s new Green Hub in Poole, Dorset. The inspirational space is giving everything from bath bomb moulds to bathtubs themselves a second life, enabling the brand to keep a beady eye on parameters from wastewater processing to washing its spas’ towels. The Green Hub is the topic of the June issue’s Eco Report on p20
but Cosmetics Business’ look into how brands and retailers manage their waste and its processing does not stop there. In stark contrast to Lush – and to the industry’s generally admirable attempts to address packaging circularity – Amanda Pauley uncovers on p50 that the wider beauty industry still has a long way to go when it comes to addressing waste product, be this in the form of unsold inventory, soon-to-expire items or discontinued lines. She speaks to those brands making it their mission to tackle this vital, though ‘unsexy’ subject and discovers the ways in which they’re approaching the issue.
The June edition also opens up the floor to debate over whether packaging lightweighting, sturdy refills, or a meeting of both worlds (where possible) is the optimal approach to sustainable packaging (p26). Plus, we discover the latest packaging options for refillable eyeshadows (p30).
