A NEW VISION FOR POST: AWS ‘STUDIO IN THE CLOUD’
At IBC, I also caught up with Katrina King, the project lead for the AWS ‘Studio in the Cloud’ solution, who summarised:
“Part of the vision is for the content to live in the studio data link. It doesn’t matter where the post house workloads exist, whether in the post house or VFX or the studios themselves, it can be arranged that those workloads can access that content as required.
“Those original camera files never need to leave the studios’ content lake itself. The workloads come to the content and draw upon it as necessary. That way you can really live in the security paradigm where everything lives in the studio’s data link, and everything accesses that as required. It’s not just limited to core post production workflows. Within the vision, all of the third- party SaaS solutions, ISVs [independent software vendors], your dailies platforms; they can all reach in there and grab what they have to within the principles of the studios security protocols.
“It means that you only need to store it once and never worry about it again. It lives there throughout the lifecycle and then it’s archived and never needs to leave where it was originally placed.
“The AWS ‘Studio in the Cloud’ is an example of best practices using a sample of partners that can be built up in any number of ways. The tools themselves are fundamentally scalable.

“The Arch Platform, which we’re showcasing here, will allow us to spin up 500 workstations right now if we want to (not that anybody is going to). The commodity workstations, the offline editorial, are really easy.
“And then there’s the more complicated things, like the colour pipeline, which require bespoke interventions. It’s still scalable but needs a little bit more manual intervention in order to connect but it can still be managed through the Arch Platform layer. Arch will allow you to reproduce your environment in remote locations. So, if you have a success here in the London region, for instance, we can take that, replicate that and move that to LA.
“If you come and see us at NAB, we’ll have a completely different set of partners. Everything
is a showcase of what is possible. What we provide is the underlying infrastructure and the best practices. We’re agnostic.
“You don’t want the same asset in ten different places. In addition, we too often neglect to focus on content security. What is the cost of a complete loss of investment. And when everything is securely in the cloud it’s not changing hands and that’s traditionally where those content leaks are taking place. It gives the studio security that their content will not be released without their authorisation.
“It is going to shorten the time to start. It’s going to make it easier to scale. It’s going to eliminate the requirement to provision hardware and ultimately, I think it’s going to
