Avalon

Avalon, which spans TV, talent management, live shows and distribution, takes the number one spot in the Production 100 for the second time in a row. Avalon says it has had its most successful year since launching in 1989, with more than 30 shows in production, including 11 new commissions.


Lime Pictures


Its slate includes multiple Emmy winner Last Week Tonight with John Oliver. Pause with Sam Jay, Avalon’s second contribution to HBO’s late night schedule has just delivered its second season. Sky and FX’s Breeders launched its third season, while Starstruck launched its second season and a third has been ordered by both HBO Max and BBC3. Taskmaster has bedded in at Channel 4, which is serving up seasons 12 and 13; the format also has eight international versions. C4 also greenlit The Horne Section TV Show from Alex Horne (creator of Taskmaster) and his band. Elsewhere, the second season of Spitting Image launched on BritBox


OO3 Endor

Turnover has climbed from £50m to £72.2m at Lime Pictures, which says it has enjoyed continued growth from the SVOD market over the past year. As well as long-runners The Only Way Is Essex and Hollyoaks, Lime also produces Netflix kids drama Free Rein and this year has produced Netflix format Dance Monsters. It’s moving into animation too, adapting fantasy adventure series Werewold for Netflix with the animation team at Jellyfish Pictures. Lime’s US team has also been commissioned to make true crime format Who Do You Believe? for ABC.

OO4 Bad Wolf

Endor has shot up the rankings in the Production 100. It has been shooting in Scotland on Amazon Studios’ ambitious adaptation of Neil Gaiman’s bestseller Anansi Boys, alongside Gaiman’s The Blank Corporation and Red Production. Delroy Lindo and Malachi Kirby star in the six-part series, while Lenny Henry was on the writing team and was one of the exec producers. Endor also produces the acclaimed Vienna Blood, which has been recommissioned for a third series. Demand for content is still very strong, says Endor, adding that cost inflation is a challenge with so much shooting.


Howard Hour also launched on Sky alongside new series Russell Howard Stands Up To The World. Not Going Out continues to be the UK’s longest running sitcom on air.

It’s a busy time at drama indie Bad Wolf, whose turnover has climbed from £49.8m to £66.1m - helping it rise from 10th to 5th place in the P100. Highlights include filming A Discovery of Witches season 3, Industry season 2, His Dark Materials season 3 during the continued challenging Covid19 environment. In addition Bad Wolf prepped and filmed I Hate Suzie season 2 for delivery late 2022 and is filming period drama The Winter King. It’s also working alongside BBC Studios to make Russell T Davies’ new era of Doctor Who.

House is thriving in this buoyant era for scripted production, winning new commissions as well as returning series. Last year, BBC Studios upped its 25% stake in House, taking full ownership of the company run by former head of Film4 Tessa Ross and ex-Working Title TV boss Juliette Howell. House has had big success with BBC1 series Sherwood. Also on its slate are an adaptation of Kate Atkinson’s bestseller Life After Life; Netflix feature film The Wonder, starring Florence Pugh, and The Good Mothers for Star.
