Channel 5 is in fifth place, with 9% of the vote. “Clear steers, fast decision making, loyalty to companies who deliver, supporter of smaller out of London companies, realistic about production values for the budget, never ask for a ton of development,” is one regional indie’s verdict. Another says: “They’re decisive and come back with quick decisions. Their commissioners are busy, but open to conversations and they leave you to get on with making the programme.” C5’s loyalty to established suppliers can make it seem a closed shop to others. “Everyone there seems extraordinarily overworked,” points out one indie. Another thinks C5 has “the most destructive business affairs department in the cosmos.” “Budgets are so low!” says another.
UKTV
UKTV wins plaudits for its “small and engaged team.” Many indies describe the broadcaster as supportive and say they are “great communicators.” But there is criticism of a “very opaque commissioning process which has little respect for indie prod cos.”
The streamers Netflix
Of all the streamers, Netflix earns the most praise from producers; 40% say it is the best streamer to deal with. But, given its scale in the UK (where it has a content spend of around $1 billion) it also generates plenty of negative feedback too: 39% say it is the hardest streamer to work with. “The new UK team have started to really broaden their contacts beyond the tried and tested,” says one indie. “We’ve started getting regular face to face meetings.” Others say Netflix gives clear
