A TIME OF PLENTY, BUT PLENTY OF CHALLENGES AHEAD This issue we publish our landmark survey of the UK’s independent TV production sector, The Production 100. Whereas in last year’s survey, the picture was one of recovery post-Covid,
this time “a gold rush is the image that springs to mind.” Business has boomed over the past year with broadcasters, both
domestic and international, refilling their coffers with content once again. A weakened pound has made the UK a very attractive prospect for US buyers in particular. It’s not all rosy, of course. That surge in demand has led to challenges.
Talent is a particular issue with so much production going on, experienced staff for crucial roles are often scarce, facilities, both in production and post are stretched to the limit, budgets aren’t heading upwards while costs for staff, facilities and the still present Covid contingencies are. And let’s not forget the spectre of Channel 4 privatisation and a burgeoning recession. In the post world, it’s a mixed picture too. Post, like production, has
experienced a boom post Covid. But, as with indies, so post houses are grappling with talent shortages, real estate costs and, significantly for post houses, energy prices are a big worry. We ask a cross section of facilities how they aim to face these challenges. All of the above means everyone is having to make work flow more
efficiently. This issue, we take a look at developments in AI and machine learning - a niche topic for now, but one that is growing in its influence, particularly in VFX where it’s increasingly being used to take out much of the donkey work. We find out the state of play right now and where it’s heading. Similarly, we also survey new developments aimed at getting a project from set to screen in the quickest and most efficient way possible. Factual and reality TV is also a focus this issue. In our factual genre
report, we look into a genre that is becoming more in demand from streamers and PSBs alike. It is providing the big hits they crave while being cheaper and faster to produce than other genres. Multi cam reality and docs are also a focus. We see how these shows are upping their technical game as audiences demand ever higher quality. This time, we also take a moment to simply celebrate the incredible
