2 Mats

Wychwood’s mats have always been held in high regard and it seems the brand has kept to its word about listening to end user feedback and designing around it; there are standard and Tactical models (discerned by either all-green for standard models or green/camo on Tactical products) with two distinct types of user as the target customer.

The ‘standard’ range comprises a large walled unhooking mat and an oval model. The Walled Unhooking Mat (£94.99) is the big daddy of the range, offering a whole host of features; the 250mm high side walls are padded with 60mm foam (just like the base), there’s a fold-out kneeling pad, front pocket for weighing accessories, carry straps plus a mesh cover that velcroes into place to keep fish safe. There’s also mesh underneath the removable base to allow for drainage. It also folds down to what is actually an impressively compact unit, making it easier to transport. The Walled Mat also exists as

a Tactical product, slightly lighter and less bulky thanks to marginally different dimensions; as a result it’s a tenner less. Obviously, both walled versions will find favour where fishery rules stipulate this type of design, or when an angler wants extra confidence when handling fish. The Oval Unhooking Mat (£84.99) is very much the mat to suit all occasions; the clamshell design means it fold up nice and neat yet the 750x1150mm dimensions mean it’s big enough for pretty much anything in UK waters. There’s a ‘hidden’ wall in the 90mm foam base, with the outside of the mat being higher than the middle to create a bowl that will help retain fish in place. A mesh cover assists also. There’s a built-in kneeling mat and a shoulder strap so it can be used for stalking duties. The final product is the Tactical Sling Mat (£69.99) which is very much aimed at anglers who want to retain a more mobile approach, as per all Tactical- branded products. The flexible 60mm foam base folds down the middle and

there are tough carry/weigh handles and double zips so it can quickly assume a role as a weigh sling. It’s super-light so for anglers who stalk (or just want to travel light) and thanks to that zip design, you can pop rods, a net and other gear and carry it like a shoulder bag to make life easier.
