NEWS The Sharper Carper joins Solar

1 The man behind some of carp fishing’s best known brands joins Solar J

ohn Hannent, the name behind the identities of Korda, Guru, Mainline Match, Sticky, CARPology, Cygnet, JRC, BaitWorks, Rod Hutchinson, Blakes, Embryo and many more, plus memorable ad campaigns for most; has joined Solar Tackle as… well he won’t actually tell us so we’re saying midfield general!

“I’ve normally got ‘Creative’ in my title,” jokes John, “but that’s a bit pretentious when you’re talking to

anglers! I’m here to bring a strategy, some advertising nous and ‘creativity’ (he crosses his fingers) across all above- the-line communications, digital and print, packaging, video and beyond. “I also want to increase our dialogue with the shops out there. I’ve probably been closer to the Solar brand than anyone beside Lockey, so know it well; lived it in fact.

“And following expansion and a huge schedule of ’significant’ new

product there was a job of work to be done and frankly, I really fancied it. Funnily enough, I still use the gear Lockey gave me when I first started working for the company, which is a statement in itself.”

Back in the day! Creativity is the name of the game!

Solar’s new creative man, John Hannent

2 24 | Tackle & Guns | Issue: 752

John has actually worked part-time for Solar for over 30 years. His first ‘campaign’ in angling was Solar’s ’Show Her Your Tackle / Sharper Carper’ stuff, which caused a bit of a fuss to say the least! “That’s the impact (30 years and counting) that good creative brings,” adds John. Interestingly John was also one of the original directors of CARPology, dealing with the branding and launch. The concept was called ‘Carper’s Digest’ when he turned up, which further illustrates what he brings to the table in branding, ideas and success. “It will never be like the old days, the landscape’s changed; but Solar’s personality, quality and brand values haven’t,” he explains. “And now it’s my job to get this message out there, which I will” he winks. With mainstream companies like Nissan, Seagate, Sun and Cable & Wireless in his portfolio outside of the trade, you get the impression we’re in for one hell of a ride!
