OPINIONS, FACTS, STORIES AND WHAT’S NEW IN THE FASCINATING WORLD OF YACHTING
CARIBBEAN SEASON It’s in full swing YACHTIE TYPES
THE “PROFESSIONAL” YACHT CV WRITER It seems the only qualification required to become a CV writer in yachting is to have worked on a boat for approximately five minutes. And ironically most of those advertising on social media have been fired for not being very good at it… So it’s lovely they found another niche to exploit in the same wealthy industry. With graphics so snazzy that the user can’t edit themselves (so you have to pay and wait for every update), unnecessary buzz words and fluff galore, or spelling mistakes so rife that the document is a complete joke… Because nothing says professional like a CV full of typos
and grammatical errors does it? So, if you insist on paying someone an exorbitant fee to write your CV when guides can be found for free on serious recruitment experts’ websites Then on your head be it.
despite the restrictions on getting into most islands (Covid passports, PCRs, isolations etc). Superyacht owners are not going to be deterred this winter from enjoying their new toys, or chartering the best yachts in the world.
THE BLAME GAME Blaming everyone else
for our own shortcomings is so hot right now, looking at YOU Ben Affleck – a fabulous example of someone who takes absolutely no responsibility for his own addictions, issues, narcissistic behaviour, instead publicly attributing his drinking problems to his ex wife, Jen Garner (even though she was the one who, 3 years AFTER they divorced, drove his sorry backside to rehab and probably saved his life). Urgh.
ONLINE LEARNING Thanks to Covid imposed
THE PERCENTAGE OF THE WORLD’S SHARK AND RAY SPECIES THAT ARE THREATENED WITH EXTINCTION
NAUTICAL ETYMOLOGY...
SKYSCRAPER The term ‘skyscraper’ is rooted in sailing. It was first used to describe the small, triangular sail that sits above the other sails on classic sailing boats, as they used to ‘scrape the sky’. The sail may also be known as a ‘moonsail’, the square sail flown immediately above the skysail on the royal mast of a square rigged sailing ship.
NAUTICAL HEROES RICHARD WOODGET
Richard Woodget (21 November 1845 – 5/6 March 1928) Remembered as the most successful captain of the Cutty Sark, Captain Woodget broke records and gained acclaim in the maritime world. Woodget was given command of Cutty Sark. He was to be her last Master under the British flag in the nineteenth century. He was fearless but never reckless, and he had more faith in the ship than any who had gone before him. He was captain for ten voyages, more than any of his predecessors.
“The heart of man is very much like the sea, it has its storms, it has its tides and in its depths, it has its pearls too.”
Vincent van Gogh
travel restrictions, social distancing and what not, the shift from classroom to online learning continues. We all thought it would be a temporary solution but it seems like the way forward! This can only be a good thing, making courses far more accessible.
REBOOTS Meanwhile in TV land reboots and
revisits are the gifts that keep on giving. Tiger King 2 popped up along with a third documentary about the rather odd big cat “guru”, Doc Antle, neither were as well received as the original lock down masterpiece though! However, And Just Like That, Sex and the City’s reboot is, so far, provoking headlines and a LOT of talk. But shh, don’t talk about Peleton’s shares please.
PAY INCREASES Apparently, and as predicted
due to the crew shortage (thanks again to Covid), salaries have increased this winter season over in the US/Caribbean. Due to short supply, crew are able to effectively charge what they like, we just heard about a freelance stew charging $500 a day! Bet she’s going to have an epic Christmas.
DON’T BE TOO SOCIAL Tax authorities have
clearly had some time on their hands around the world. US, Aus and NZ especially have been investigating people via their social media. That’s not just facebook – it’s also Instagram, twitter, and interestingly Linked In. So if you say you’re unemployed but your profiles show you’re not… well like the tax authorities, you can do the math.
