The fastest way to treat your skin is to bag a good serum

T

hey feel sensuous on the skin and create an extra layer between your delicate

complexion and the elements, especially important during the winter months, and the ravages wrought by dehydrating central heating and biting winter winds that take their toll on skin’s wellbeing. So equip yourself with a complexion correcting, protecting, souped- up formula, and pave your way to a smoother, more luminous visage.

The fastest way to treat your skin needs? Bag yourself a good serum. Serums seem to be potent and powerful and if we believe the before and after shots in the glossies (do we???), they achieve magnificent things, especially if you’re in your mid-twenties and really don’t need any skin care treatments even after a night on the tiles.

With roots in Japanese beauty, a serum can deliver a more potent dose of skin benefiting ingredients than your normal day cream.

With a much lighter consistency than face creams, they contain a higher concentration of active ingredients. The smaller molecular weight can penetrate the skin much deeper than a heavier cream. In fact, serums are the ones that do all the hard work. If you could only use one skincare product for the rest of your life, we’d say grab a serum.

They help combat a number of skin issues, everything from dehydration and wrinkles, to dullness and pigmentation. Once you’re done applying the face serum, be sure to follow up with your normal moisturiser.

FINDING THE BEST FACE SERUM FOR YOU

What is serum? Serum is a skincare product you can apply to your skin after cleansing but before moisturising with the objective of delivering powerful ingredients directly into the skin. Serum is particularly suited to this task because it is made up of smaller molecules that can penetrate deeply into the skin and deliver a very high concentration of active ingredients. This makes them a great tool for targeting specific skincare concerns.

Is serum a moisturiser? Yes and no. Serums can be chock-a-block with moisturising ingredients (hyaluronic acid, ceramides) to help skin retain moisture. But, that doesn’t make them moisturisers in the traditional sense. Face lotions and creams are richer and create a barrier on top of the skin to keep all that good stuff in.

How often should I use my serum? Well, this all depends on the serum. Read the label (good

luck), but once a day will probably cover all bases.

What’s the difference between serum and face oil? Good question. Water-based serums go under the cream and they are so important. They nourish the inner layer of the skin because the molecule is very small so it penetrates. The oil-based serums go on top of the moisturiser because they have a bigger molecule. To find out more head to your local beautician.

WHEN TO USE A SERUM

To brighten dull skin As you age, your skin can

naturally start to lose that look of natural radiance. Before

reaching for your highlighter, apply the chosen serum to clean skin, both morning and

evening, to help illuminate the skin and stimulate cell renewal, revealing more youthful looking complexion.

To minimise the appearance of dark spots

Daily UV exposure and aging

can result in the appearance of dull skin and discolourations like dark spots. Serums

can make skin look more luminous and help fade the appearance of dark spots with continued use over time. Apply it to a clean complexion in the morning, and be sure to also take sun protection measures.

To address the signs of ageing Face serum plays a vital role in any effective anti-aging skin care routine. Pick a serum that contains intensely hydrating

hyaluronic acid. These serums absorb quickly to help reveal

instantly replenished, plumped skin. Vitamin C is another

potent anti-aging ingredient to keep an eye out for when choosing a serum.

To help boost volume

As you mature, your skin can gradually lose moisture and

volume, especially in delicate areas like cheekbones and under the eyes. To replenish

volume and moisture retention in these areas, reach for a targeting serum that contains

hyaluronic acid. Dispense a few drops on fingertips and apply

focusing on any problem areas, until absorbed.
