Technology is moving fast and every touch point in our lives can be affected by these changes in one way or another. ONBOARD looks at how the industry is embracing these transformations and what is coming next and how we can prepare for the next digital revolution


technology plays a major part and non more so than within the superyacht industry. Technology is intrinsically connected to the crew and to the owner or guests and before anyone even sets foot on the yacht, there is a myriad of technology involved in the design, innovation, build and yard period of any new build. Every square inch of the yachts at some point is touched by technology in one form or another.

Of course once the yacht is launched, the crew focus on delivering an incredible experience to the owner and guests and this is where we are going to concentrate on within the following pages.


I think we shall start with the software that the owner or guests might not even be aware of and probably never see, but are perhaps the most important sections of the technology world on board a yacht. I’m talking safety, compliance and maintenance.


Forget one minute about legislation and think about pure safety. The ISM/ISPS systems, certifications and compliance, ISPS Security Assessments & Audits, Crew certification and compliance, the list goes on. Everything here is designed to make sure the yacht is running in line with regulations and the necessary compliance certification. It’s an area where new regulations come into force on quite a regular basis, and it can be hard to keep track of things and to

make sure everything is in order for flag audits or port state controls. So having a robust piece of management software is vital. Keeping everything in one place that is accessible instantly will enhance the running of an efficient vessel - everyone therefore benefits, crew, owners and guests.


The next level of technology to look at is VSAT and general communications. Whilst vital for the running of an efficient and safe vessel, the owner’s and guest’s demands can be quite heavy here. The boss is watching his favourite football team play, while other guests are streaming movies and music, the on board systems can not fail here, and we’re not even talking about the data the yacht and crew need themselves to do their job. The next level of satellites (LEO constellations) are hitting the market and the next generation phased terminals will provide multibeam support - all very technical I know, but this is a good thing, believe me. What about 5G I hear you say, but in reality, terrestrial 5G networks are not fully implemented on land and even less is available at sea, but this will improve in the very near future.


The technology closest to the owner and guests is of course those surrounding AV and entertainment on board. Music, lights, cinema and internal communication with the crew. You can even bring domotics and HVAC into this sector, these all have an extremely close touch point with the owner and guests. services together with mood lighting, all go hand-in-hand to deliver an unbeatable entertainment experience for the guests. All these systems are reliant on the little black boxes you don’t ever see, and it’s down to the genius AV suppliers to deliver a system that is intuitive to use, accessible in multiple areas around the yacht and is relatively easy for the crew to maintain and update.


Last but not least are the apps we’re seeing developed for crew. Apps to help enhance the crew knowledge about their yacht and to assist with training, or the apps connected to recruitment are all useful. Then there is the latest development from the Isle of Man Registry focusing on the all important health and mental welfare of seafarers across the planet.


So what ever aspect of professional yachting we look at, technology is front and centre and will only improve our industry as a whole.
